Synopsis:
Chinese immigrant Chen has just arrived in the gritty streets of 19th century London. The harsh urban life soon changes the devout Buddhist, who believes that "to be alive on this Earth is a beautiful thing," into a callous and miserly businessman. When Chen meets Lucy, the daughter of prize-fighter Battling Burrows, she helps him regain his moral compass. A beautiful young woman, Lucy is at the mercy of her abusive father, who routinely humiliates and assaults his daughter. Chen, seeking a way to save Lucy, finds himself fighting against the cruel forces of capitalism and entrenched anti-Chinese sentiment.

This 1936 Twickenham production Produced by Julius Hagen who put together a fine team of technicians. Hagen a German, called upon several countrymen, Hans Brahm Director, Curt Courant Photography then on screen Dolly Haas, and our own master of the scissors Ralph Kemplen. Comparisons are made to the DW Griffith version which seems unnecessary. The early model work is not the best but enjoy this fine but not "pc" production. The picture and sound have been restored to a very good quality for a title of this age.

The spiritual and peace-loving Chen resides in London's Limehouse district, where he teaches and promotes peaceful Buddhist concepts. He is attracted to the beleaguered Lucy Burrows, whose prizefighter father beats her persistently. When Chen rescues Lucy from one of her father's attacks, the boxer sets out to avenge himself on the foreigner.
