Synopsis:
With 'Bal" ('Honey"), the Turkish director Semih Kaplanoglu enables the lush mountain forests of Rize Province, near the Black Sea, to express what its young protagonist cannot. Yusuf (Bora Altas), an elementary-school student, struggles with a stammer; oral readings in class are such an ordeal that he remains indoors at recess. An overheard passage of Rimbaud read aloud in a classroom gives him a glimmer of the poetic eloquence he can aspire to. Winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2010 and Turkey's entry for best foreign-language film at the Oscars this year, the semi-autobiographical 'Bal" is the third in a trilogy about Yusuf. It has no musical soundtrack (and barely any dialogue), only a quiet, unforced, organic rhythm. And those spellbinding images. Like the viewer, Mr. Kaplanoglu is quite happy to let nature do the talking and cast a lyrical, mysterious spell.

The young boy Yusuf's best friend is his father, who supports his family's modest life with the honey he collects from tall trees in the forests of the remote Turkish countryside. Yusuf is a quiet boy, and his mother is concerned for his future. Perhaps he will follow in his father's footsteps, or perhaps school will offer him other opportunities. But the honey crop is failing, and Yusuf has trouble learning how to read. The greatest fear strikes when Yusuf's father doesn't return home from the forest.

Growing up in the wilderness of Rize province northeast Turkey Yusuf suffers from bullying at school as a result of his stutter. He escapes the drudgery of the classroom by accompanying his bee-keeper father deep into the forest to collect honey finding the woods a place of wonderment & mystery. But one day when his father goes off alone in search of more bees Yusuf feels isolated and retreats further into his own mind.
