Synopsis:
Salman Rushdie, the Indian-born British essayist and novelist, is considered to be one of the greatest authors of the 20th century. His novels have been translated all over the world. On 14th February 1989, Iran's Ayatollah Khomeni issued a fatwa calling for the death of Rushdie for his fourth novel 'The Satanic Verses'. In 1999, Rushdie decided to go and live in the US, even though the fatwa still remained in effect. Since then, the world has changed, with 9/11 and the war in Iraq. How does Rushdie now see himself and the world around him? 'Salman Rushdie, Imaginary India' looks at the land of his childhood, a source of literary inspiration for him that fed his imagination and his œuvre. It also looks at his last ten years as a free man. The film is an invitation to travel through the personal world of a man whose literary work has become the symbol of the struggle against religious obscurantism.
