Synopsis:
The Spanish Civil War exerted a strong impact on artists in Hollywood. Many of them supported campaigns against non-intervention policy of the U.S. government participated in rallies or paid ambulances to the Republican side. As stated by Fred Zinneman, defeat of democratic Spain left a gaping wound in the hearts of Hollywood liberals. Many writers used it for years, to strengthen the noble and romantic nature of some characters in his films, Rick in 'Casablanca', for example. 'Hollywood against Franco' shows how the Spanish Civil War was used in Hollywood between 1937 and 1975 - in line with the trends and interests of American politics of the moment. From liberal positions in the 40-prorepublicanas with Nazism as enemy, the approach to Franco in the 50s, when the enemy was communism. The relationship between cinema and politics is told through the story of Alvah Bessie, a Hollywood screenwriter who fought as a brigade in the Spanish war. The film is constructed with clips from famous movies like 'Casablanca', 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro' or 'The Way We Were', among others. And with the statements of actress Susan Sarandon, screenwriters Arthur Laurents and Walter Bernstein, and film historians and Patrick McGilligan Gubern Roman, among others.

Examines the efforts made by the US film industry to support the Spanish Republic during the Civil War and then to draw movie-goers' attention to what was happening during the subsequent Franco years
