Vincere (2009)
There are secrets in the life of Mussolini: namely Benito Albino - son to first wife Ida Dalser, who was born, acknowledged, and then swiftly denied. It is a dark page in history, one ignored in the official biography of the Duce. When Ida meets Mussolini in Milan, he is the editor of Avanti and an ardent Socialist who intends to guide the masses towards an anti-clerical, anti-monarchical, socially emancipated future. Ida, still reeling from a fleeting encounter with him in Trento, truly believes in the man and his ideas. In order to finance Popolo d'Italia, a newspaper he had founded and the nucleus of the forthcoming Fascist Party, Ida sells everything she has. When the First World War erupts, Benito Mussolini enrols in the army and disappears. When Ida finds him again in a military hospital, he is tended to by Rachele whom he has just married. Ida demands her rights as Mussolini's true wife and the mother of his first-born son. She is led away by force; physically restrained and tortured for eleven years. But Ida will not give up without a fight. While the history is fascinating, it's the film's mesmerizing style that takes the breath away, alternately theatrical, spectacular, intimate and resounding. 'Vincere' is a gripping film that combines drama, archive footage, and music creating a highly cinematic oratorio of enormous rhetorical force.

The Last Pulcinella (2008)
The Last Pulcinella' is liberally inspired by Roberto Rossellini's unedited screenplay and directed by acclaimed theatre maestro Maurizio Scaparro. A story of the difficult relationship between a young Neapolitan in search of new creative inspirations and a life far away from his hometown, and a father who hardly manages to survive as a street artist. Massimo Ranieri (one of Italy's greatest pop singers) stars as the struggling middle-aged actor Michelangelo, separated from his wife, who performs 'stories of Pulcinella' as a street artist in Naples' piazzas. His son Francesco (Domenico Balsamo) flees to Paris after witnessing a Camorra crime. Michelangelo follows him after a tip-off by his estranged wife even though he does not speak a word of French. With the help of an old friend Dorient (Jean Sorel), and an ageless actress (Adriana Asti) who lives in an abandoned theatre, the father and son put on a show that will reinvigorate their often strained relationship.

Many Kisses Later (2009)
The 2009 Italian box office champion 'Many Kisses Later' (also know as 'Ex'), from Fausto Brizzi, is a brisk romantic comedy about that crazy little thing called love. It does indeed begin with declarations of love and plenty of kisses, but the question is raised: does love go on? The film follows six couples between Christmas and Valentine's Day in episodes that intertwine and revolve around the end of a love affair and the ways former lovers can shape our lives. Exes are like the Phoenix rising from the ashes... not dead but rather lying in wait. 'Many Kisses Later' offers illustrations of relationships that have turned into hatred, into friendship, and ones where the flame of love still burns. Some lovers have lost sight of each other by choice, others by a bizarre twist of fate, others by mistake. But the film's message is clear: exes remain a part of our lives and who we are, for better or worse, is at least in part due to them.

The Early Bird Catches the Worm (2008)
Florence, early seventies. Marco is a young man, he still live with his parent and has a girlfriend, Cristina. He doesn't know what to do in his life but he is very passionate about music so he starts doing the DJ in clubs and then to host a program on the radio. Despite of the success Marco is unhappy and apathetic. The lack of emotions will come true one day when he enter in a race, from that moment Marco's life will change, he begins to lose more money and he also begins to poker. Luckily it is noted by the famous producer Cecchetto that brings him to Milan for a test for Radio Deejay. Marco, all alone in a huge city starts to bet again.

As God Commands (2008)
Adesolate northern Italian town set beneath majestic mountains. Scattered houses built along a highway, in the midst of enormous lumber yards, shopping centres and neon. Rino and Cristiano Zena, father and son, live here. Rino makes do with odd jobs. Cristiano is in middle school. It is the two of them against the world. Rino raises his son the best he can. Cristiano worships his father with a misguided but powerful love. Their lone friend, Quattro Formaggi, has not been right in the head since an accident. He spends his days building a strange manger scene made of trash taken from the town dump...

The Man Who Loves (2008)
Maria Sole Tognazzi follows her actor/writer/director father Ugo and brother Ricky in an accomplished family tradition with her intense third feature that opened the 2008 Rome International Film Festival. The film traces two significant, successive and opposite love stories of the almost forty year-old pharmacist Roberto (Pierfrancesco Favino). One is with Sara (Ksenia Rappoport 'The Unknown Woman') a hotel desk manager in Torino, while the other is with Alba (Monica Bellucci), a chic art gallery curator. Roberto envies the romantic success of his beloved, gay younger brother Carlo (Michele Alhaique) who is deliriously happy with lover Yuri (Glen Blackhall), but can't find the right emotional groove himself. The game of love has Roberto assume opposing roles in his own relationships, experiencing both the sweetness and cruelty of love, and ultimately love's own revenge.

Giulia Doesn't Go Out at Night (2009)
Guido writes novels and short stories; he's detached, diffident. When his wife and teenage daughter move, he stays behind to write. He takes swimming lessons; his teacher is Giulia, somber, perhaps melancholy. They talk from time to time; he invites her out, and she says she doesn't go out at night. We see Guido's stories dramatized - unhappy characters in search of something. Guido helps his daughter navigate a first crush; he disengages from a campaign to win a literary prize. His wife challenges him to reconnect with her. Instead, he focuses on Giulia: drawing her out, learning of her past. Then he intervenes. Can a novelist write reality?

The 1000 Euro Generation (2009)
In Milan, Matteo is an underemployed physicist, giving the occasional lecture at a university while working at a PR firm where he knows he'll be fired. Without his really trying, two women are attracted to him, a blond and a brunette. The blond is Angelica; they meet smoking on the office rooftop. To his surprise, she has clout in the company and soon has him flying off (with her) to make presentations. The brunette is Beatrice, a new flatmate, hoping for a teaching job in the national service. Angelica dangles a posting with her in Barcelona; Beatrice is simply Beatrice. Will Matteo figure out what he wants - and decide before opportunity passes him by?

Fortapasc (2009)
1985. Giancarlo Siani, a reporter for Il Mattino, is killed with ten pistol shots. An easygoing 26 year-old, he loves his life and his work: he gathers information and checks it. We see the last four months of his life. Every day he goes from his home in the Vomero neighbourhood to the hell of Torre Annunziata, kingdom of crime boss Valentino Gionta. Giancarlo is investigating corruption in earthquake reconstruction efforts. Amidst the mafiosi, corrupt politicians, frightened prosecutors and helpless policemen, he is like a lily in the mud. The night of his murder, he is supposed to go with his girlfriend to a concert by rock star Vasco Rossi...

Giovanna's Father (2008)
Bologna 1938. Michele Casali has a serious problem. His teenage daughter, Giovanna, has just killed her best friend in a jealous frenzy. The girl is declared to be incompetent and is committed to a psychiatric hospital. While inside, she spends her time in almost total isolation. The only person who comes to see her is her father. His visitations strengthen the already strong father-daughter relationship from which Delia, the girl's mother, has always been excluded. In the winter of 1953, Delia and Giovanna's eyes cross paths in a small cinema in Bologna: Giovanna is by now much better and is in the company of her doting father. Her mother no longer has any doubts--this is the start of a new life together.
