Synopsis:
High on the list of the year's corniest symbolic acts in a Hollywood movie is the freeing of a grizzly bear from its cage in the contemporary western 'An Unfinished Life.' And what exactly does the liberation of the beast from a makeshift rural zoo signify? In this solemn, sentimental bore of a movie that suffocates in its own predictability and watered-down psychobabble, it presages Oprah-worthy healing and imminent family togetherness after years of strife. Before its capture and release, the bear in question lurks on the Wyoming ranch where Einar Gilkyson (Robert Redford), a farmer and recovering alcoholic, has been stewing in bitterness over the death of his son 12 years earlier. Einar shares the property with Mitch Bradley (Morgan Freeman), his farm hand of four decades who was seriously mauled by the animal a year before the story begins. The film also stars Jennifer Lopez as Einar's daughter-in-law, Jean, who shows up on the Gilkyson homestead with her 11-year-old daughter. An adaptation of Mark Spragg's novel of the same title, 'An Unfinished Life' was directed by Lasse Hallstrom, whose gradual softening into a director of Hallmark-style sentimentality offers a cautionary case study of an artist succumbing to the bottom-line mentality of Hollywood

Trying to escape from her abusive ex-boyfriend Gary Winston against who she has a restraining order, widowed Jean Gilkyson, with her eleven year old daughter Griff Gilkyson in tow, takes temporary refuge in the only place she knows and feels she can hide in safety, namely the Wyoming ranch of her estranged father-in-law, Einar Gilkyson. Einar, who did not know of his granddaughter's existence, does not welcome them with open arms as he still blames Jean for the car accident death of his son Griffin Gilkyson twelve years earlier, but he allows them to stay for the month, enough time for Jean to earn enough money to move elsewhere. The strain between Jean and Einar increases as she quickly begins a sexual relationship with the town sheriff, Crane Curtis, who Griff does not like solely because of that relationship. Einar's ranching partner Mitch Bradley, who is recovering from a bear mauling and who is now permanently disabled and lives on a daily injection of morphine as a result, is Einar's voice of reason in trying to convince him to establish a caring relationship with the only family he has left. Mitch's perspective is in part due to the mauling, the attacking bear - now captured and on display in town - with which he has a special attachment.

In order to escape from the abusive boy-friend, Gary Winston, Jean Gilkyson moves with her young daughter Griff Gilkyson without previous notice to the ranch of her father-in-law Einar Gilkyson in Wyoming. Jean and Einar are disaffected, since he blames her for the death of his beloved son in a car accident. Einar is taking care of his friend Mitch Bradley, who was attacked and seriously wounded by a bear, and he does not know that he has a grand-daughter. While Mitch heals his wounds and forgives the bear, Einar also changes his feelings regarding Jean, finally understanding that accidents happen and accepting her and loving his grand-daughter.
