Synopsis:
Ça brûle / It Burns (2006)
Livia, fifteen, is one with her environment, seizing every day the strength of the elements as she rides her horse. Passionate and intense, she falls in love with Jean, a fireman and married father of 40. In her mind, his fights against fire make him the incarnation of rightness. He is a steady force against excesses; against fear and panic. But their love falls apart when he returns to his family, and leaves place to destruction.

800 kilomètres de différence - Romance / 800 km Difference - Romance (2002)
Documentary about two teenagers in love separated by geography: Manon lives in Paris, Greg in a small village in the south - 800 kilometres apart.

Ça brûle / It Burns (2006)
Having been thrown from her horse, fifteenyear- old Livia lies unconscious. Coming back to her senses as the fireman Jean tests her reactions, she feels his hands on her body and is overcome by a wave of desire. All through the day, the adolescent tries all she can to attract a married man who has awakened such a burning passion in her - this sudden love leads her to go beyond the point of no return. As her own camerawoman, film director Claire Simon scans the faces and bodies of her characters with a sensuousness that invites the observor to reach out and touch them. The stirrings of desire carry the dreams and rage of a young woman, the forces at play in her body and soul. This is conveyed less on a psychological level than through the behaviour and at times even quite trivial gestures of the young horse-woman. With the exception of Gilbert Melki, most of the actors are non-professionals, including Camille Varenne, a former student of the Circus Frattellini, in the principal role. In its casting, ÇA BRULE blends documentary and fictional approaches. By inserting footage of the fires that ravaged the heavily-wooded department of the Var in 2004 and 2005, the film director interweaves her romance with the dramatic impact of a local event and its settings. The result is a disturbing and sensitive film accompanied by a magnificant soundtrack.

800 kilomètres de différence - Romance / 800 km Difference - Romance (2002)
To be honest, the 800 kilometers separating Claire Simon's daughter Manon from Greg, her sweetheart, are more than just spatial. She lives in the capital, he is from Claviers, a small village in the Haut-Var.The difference is also cultural - she, the city girl, reads Flaubert while he, the baker's son, is busy preparing to obtain his hunter's permit. They meet in the Provence countryside during the summer of 2000, and start a romance under the filmmaker's watchful gaze. François Truffaut once declared that 'in the Lubitsch gruyere, every hole is a masterpiece'. In the romance that unfolds before our eyes, the best is what we do not see. Claire Simon, who films the wind in the trees as if it were a caress, as if nature itself were waking up to love, knows what she is doing. When she films Gregory's father's nocturnal work, she is also filming the labour of love. And she wonderfully well captures the passing of time, so slow when one is fifteen or seventeen years old. 800 KILOMETRES DE DIFFERENCE - ROMANCE could be seen as a hommage to Jean Renoir, whose 1935 Toni, under Marcel Pagnol's guidance, announced the approach of neorealism. Indeed the portrait of Greg's Italian grandfather, whose father fled fascism in 1922, could point us in this direction, towards the corner of history jutting into each of our lives. But Claire Simon prefers to pursue that elusive something, like her daughter's awakening to love, with all of the possible fiction that it entails...

Ça brûle / It Burns (2006)
A self-absorbed adolescent girl forms an unhealthy fixation on a handsome volunteer fireman in director Claire Simon's emotional teen drama. Livia (Camille Varene) is a fifteen year-old girl who lives in the south of France with her divorced mother. As the summer heat begins to radiate Livia spends most of her days trotting around the small Provençal town atop a horse from her father's farm. A frequent target of ridicule amongst her peers, Livia's horse emboldens her with a sense of superiority that she just can't seem to achieve in the classroom. When her father comes to claim the horse and Livia is forced to face her tormentors eye to eye, she begins to turn her attentions increasingly towards happily married husband and father Jean. A kind volunteer fireman who treats Livia with a respect rarely afforded to the girl by her peers, Jean may be old enough to be Livia's father though a strange attraction begins to develop between the pair. Later, as the young girl's infatuation with the firefighter begins to grow and she casts aside her inhibitions to pursue him romantically at any cost, the relationship shared between Livia and Jean threatens to take a tragic turn.

800 kilomètres de différence - Romance / 800 km Difference - Romance (2002)
