Synopsis:
Drunkboat tells the story of a young teenager, Abe (Jacob Zachar) who manipulates the unsuspecting help of his alcoholic uncle (John Malkovich) to buy a boat (a Drunkboat) from a con man named Mr. Fletcher (John Goodman) when his mother Eileen (Dana Delaney) is out of town. The story resonates with the struggle of Uncle Mort, making the story much deeper than a simple tale of a boy and his boat. Both the uncle and Abe come of age in the story. Based on Bob Meyer's original play.

Directed by Chicago-born Bob Meyer, Drunkboat might be classified as a coming-of-age film, but turns out to be much more with its use of minimalistic storytelling. The film, screened at the 46th Annual Chicago International Film Festival, follows Vietnam veteran Mort Gleason (John Malkovich), who after years of drinking and stumbling from place to place, reconnects with his family after coincidentally running into one of his nephews. He returns to his sister Eileen (Dana Delany), and her son, Abe (Jacob Zachar), who dreams of traveling the world. Abe is determined to buy Kathy II, a boat that he believes will take him to unchartered land outside of the Chicago suburbs.

The lives of a cast of misfits collide in this engagingly off-kilter character study with deep ties to Chicago. There's Mort (John Malkovich), a Vietnam veteran trying to soothe his survivor's guilt with alcohol; Fletcher (John Goodman), a used-boat salesman who's as corrupt as he is jocular; and Mort's nephew Abe, a wide-eyed suburban teen pursuing his quixotic dream of buying a boat and sailing the world… while keeping his mother (Dana Delany) in the dark.
