Synopsis:

One pope dies, and the conclave to elect his successor settles on Cardinal Melville. It's at the very moment when the cry of 'habemus papam' - 'we have a pope' - goes up that Melville's self-doubt surges out of control; in a great howl of fear, he refuses to step out onto the balcony, and throws the papal selection process into limbo. The Vatican's officials call in a psychoanalyst to try and talk to Melville. He, however, scoots off into the big city into a long dark night of the soul.

Following the death of the Pope, the Conclave meets to elect his successor. A cardinal is chosen who seems unable to bear the weight of such a responsibility. Is it anxiety? Is it depression? Does he feel inadequate? The faithful are waiting for the new Pope to appear on the balcony in St. Peter's Square. The world is on tenterhooks, while in the Vatican they seek ways to come through the crisis.
