Synopsis:
Crime and Punishment (1983)
Kaurismäki s first feature follows the descent into crime of Rahikainen, a slaughterhouse worker and former law student, who murders a businessman and then begins a tense game of cat and mouse with the police.

Calamari Union (1985)
A group of men, all bar one called Frank, abandon their downtrodden neighbourhood in search of Eira a near mythical district across town that promises a better life.

Hamlet Goes Buisness (1987)
In this wicked and hilarious satire of the corporate world, Kaurismäki liberally updates Shakespeare's tragedy as a hard-boiled noir B-movie.

La Vie de Bohème (1992)
Freely adapted from Henri Murger's 1851 novel, this is Kaurismäki s highly individual take on the story of three bohemian artists a poet, a painter and a composer set in a timeless Paris. Shifting between heartbreaking drama and black humour, the fine cast features cameos from Jean-Pierre Léaud, Sam Fuller and Louis Malle.

Crime and Punishment (1983)
An adaptation of Dostoyevsky's novel, updated to present-day Helsinki. Slaughterhouse worker Rahikainen murders a man, and is forced to live with the consequences of his actions...

Calamari Union (1985)
Fourteen desperate men named Frank, band together to escape from a repressive section of Helsinki. An English-speaking non-Frank named Pekka joins the barroom conspirators, whose avoidance of last names, and any affect, help them outsmart overwhelming forces as they sneak through dark subway tunnels and alleys, hoping against despair to reach magical seaside Eira. The Calamari Unionists take advantage of unending night to venture their intrepid journey.

Hamlet Goes Business (1987)
A bizarre black-and-white film noir reworking of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. After the death of his father, young Hamlet inherits a seat on the board of a company controlled by his uncle that decides to move into the rubber duck market. But Hamlet is suspicious of the circumstances surrounding his father's death...

The Bohemian Life (1992)
Three penniless artists become friends in modern-day Paris: Rodolfo, an Albanian painter with no visa, Marcel, a playwright and magazine editor with no publisher, and Schaunard, a post-modernist composer of execrable noise. Rodolfo falls in love with Mimi, a barmaid. The day he asks her to move in with him, he is deported. Six months later, he sneaks back to Paris, and Mimi leaves her new boyfriend to be with him. Conflicts arise, especially around their poverty, and soon Mimi and Rodolfo separate, as do Marcel and his Musette. The three men scrape together a meal to celebrate All Saints' Day, and Mimi arrives, ill. Can her friends bring her back to health? Can love rekindle?

Aki Kaurismäki s deadpan, ironic and idiosyncratic films have established him as one of modern European cinema's most accomplished filmmakers. This box set presents three of his remarkable and highly acclaimed features.

Crime and Punishment (1983)
Kaurismäki s first feature follows the descent into crime of Rahikainen, a slaughterhouse worker and former law student, who murders a businessman and then begins a tense game of cat and mouse with the police. Effectively updating Dostoevsky s great novel to 1980s Helsinki, this remarkably assured debut offers a sharp critique of Finnish society.

Calamari Union (1985)
A group of men, all bar one called Frank, abandon their downtrodden neighbourhood in search of Eira a near mythical district across town that promises a better life. Kaurismäki s second features details their misadventures along the way with deadpan humour and rock and roll attitude.

Hamlet Goes Buisness (1987)
In this wicked and hilarious satire of the corporate world, Kaurismäki liberally updates Shakespeare's tragedy as a hard-boiled noir B-movie. Finnish comic Pirkka-Pekka Petelius plays an irresponsible playboy who finds himself involved in a vicious boardroom power struggle with his uncle, who plans to sell off his company s assets in order to corner the market on Swedish rubber ducks.
