Synopsis:
Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman heads The Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS), cracking previously unsolved crimes from the past. Her team are three ex policemen; Gerry Standing, Jack Halford and Brian Lane, who have all opted for early retirement. The Series 8 cases include investigations into the murder of a Natural History Museum palaeontologist with plenty of enemies, a previously unidentified vagrant, a charred body with potential links to an Albanian crime circle, a popular market stall holder, a bicycle courier in possession of a deadly package, an antiques dealer and a prominent scientist who disappeared while on a train to Paris. But as UCOS dig deeper they begin to rattle cages at Whitehall and an ominous warning is issued.

A website highlighting unexplained disappearances alerts the team to the death of young mechanic Christopher Collins seven years earlier. Sandra discovers he was really called Tommy Barton,and was on a witness protection scheme having testified against drugs baron Derek Robinson. He was though a drug smuggler himself and he was having an affair with his boss's wife. In tracing the killer the team is much aided by the hypnotherapist treating Brian's insomnia and they also learn that UCOS will not be terminated to save money.

However times have changed, unlike her new recruits. Jack Halford is yet to get over the loss of his wife, Brian Lane is over obsessed and over medicated, and Gerry Standing is not quite the ladies man he used to be. They may have the experience but it's not like the old days. Not only are they chasing criminals, but they are having to deal with a new police force which does not always appreciate their old style policing.
