Synopsis:
RW Fassbinder's keen critique of German society is none more obvious than in this three film boxset combining Katzelmacher, Chinese Roulette and Satan's Brew, films in which he rages against societal pressures to do with xenophobia, the institution of marriage, patriarchy and the fetishisation of consumerism. Fassbinder's revolutionary spirit comes to the fore in these rare and insightful films, available as a boxset for the first time in Australia

Katzelmacher (1969):
In Munich, a group of friends enjoy the banality of their structured lives arguing, chatting, smoking and having sex, their days are uneventful until a Greek immigrant sparks sexual jealousy which leads to racial hostility.

Chinese Roulette (1976):
Wealthy and powerful Gerhard, convinced his wife and disabled daughter are elsewhere, takes his mistress up to his sprawling chateau. To his surprise, he walks in to find his wife on the floor with her own lover.

Satan's Brew (1976):
Walter Kranz is stuck in the grips of writer's block, and uses his abundant time by indulging his other passion sado masochistic sex. But after his lover is accidentally shot, Walter begins to spiral hilariously out of control.

Katzelmacher (1969)
Jorgos (Rainer Werner Fassbinder) is a Greek immigrant in Germany who encounters the intolerance of the locals against foreign workers. Open hostility turns to violence when he is beaten up by the authoritarian thugs after dating a German woman. Male and female nudity along with hetero and homosexual sex scenes are shown in this searing indictment against prejudice and fascism. This feature took the Prize of International Film Critics at the Mannheim Film Festival in 1969.

Chinese Roulette (1976)
Angela is the crippled daughter of two separated but still-feuding parents. In this Rainer Werner Fassbinder film, the wealthy parents are both induced to come to their country vacation house with their lovers in tow. For years, they have tried to make Angela feel guilty for having driven them to seek comfort outside their marriage, though ironically there is some indication that their dalliances may have had a hand in the accident that caused her condition. In this unpleasant milieu, they begin playing a truth-telling game called 'Chinese Roulette,' which leads to even more distasteful revelations and recriminations..

Satan's Brew (1976)
This fast-paced black comedy by wunderkind director Rainer Werner Fassbinder follows the frantic efforts of a starving and confused writer, Walter Kranz (Kurt Raab) to beg, borrow or steal enough money to survive on, and at the same time make some sense of his confusing life. Unable to write enough to keep his publisher's royalty advances coming, he seeks out a woman he imagines is a prostitute and interviews her for material. He is also inspired to utter some poetry, which his brassy, outspoken wife identifies as coming from the famous homosexuality-advocating mystical German poet, Stefan George. This inspires Walter to take a closer look at the 'gay scene,' and he quickly becomes a sort of celebrity there.

Katzelmacher (1969)
Jorgos, an emigrant worker from Greece, joins a group of young people usually hanging around. This foreigner incites hostility and jealousy among them, and he is insulted as a 'Communist' and 'Greek dog'. After having been attacked, Jorgos talks to Maria of his wish to return home.

Chinese Roulette (1976)
A wealthy couple, with a daughter Angela, a young teen who walks with crutches, tells each other they are off for the weekend on business (he to Oslo, she to Milan). Actually, both are meeting their lovers, and both go to the family's county home, Traunitz castle. Surprising each other, there's sophisticated laughter; they decide to continue as planned. Dinner, however, is interrupted by the arrival of Angela and her mute attendant, also named Traunitz. The next day, the child initiates a game of 'Chinese roulette,' in which one team tries to guess which of them the other team is thinking of by asking questions. The game has an edge of cruelty and the results are explosive.

Satan's Brew (1976)
Walter, a German anarchist poet, is short of money after his publisher refuses to give him an advance. He tries various ways of raising money, including shooting one of his mistresses and relying on the life savings of a woman from the country who is fanatically devoted to him. He also has to contend with his long-suffering wife, his fly-obsessed crazy brother, his other mistress and a police murder investigation.
