Synopsis:
Politics and humour are essential ingredients to most of Fassbinder's brilliant films, but Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven and The Third Generation are two of the prodigious film maker's most satirical, politically charged meditations on the nature of terrorism and political extremism. Candid, provocative and hilariously funny, Fassbinder on Terror is essential viewing, especially considering the paranoia of our post 911 world.

Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven (1975):
Banned from both the Berlin Film Festival and its fringe event, The Forum, Mother Ksters Goes to Heaven is one of Fassbinder's most provocative films. Faced with redundancy, factory worker Mr. Kusters murders his boss before committing suicide, leaving his widow at the mercy of two immoral communists.

The Third Generation (1979):
Fassbinder's meditation on the link between post-war attitudes and the increase of terrorism in Germany is also one of his most humorous films. Shot in a typical Fassbinder time frame in just six weeks The Third Generation introduces us to the distinctly upper class members of a fictional West German terrorist group. A largely undiscovered gem of a film.

Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven (1975)
Mother Kusters (Brigette Kira) is the wife of a factory worker who goes beserk one day, killing himself and the boss' son. Mother finds herself a media celebrity, which only serves to make herself and her late husband look like idiots. Later, Mother is "adopted" by a Communist couple who wish to exploit her husband's "act of defiance" for their own purposes. Finally left alone, Mother Kusters decides to stop living off her husband's notoriety and turn into a human being again. Director Rainer Werner Fassbinder used the 1929 film Mother Krausen's Journey to Happiness as a springboard for his own mysoginistic slant on opportunism. The film hit a bit too close to home in his own country, where it was banned from entering the Berlin Film Festival.

The Third Generation (1979)
German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder both directed and photographed The Third Generation (Die Dritte Generation). Displaying a sense of humor that can most kindly be described as perverse, Fassbinder follows the exploits of a group of well-heeled German terrorists. Without truly taking sides, the director demonstrates how the terrorists are essentially shooting themselves in the foot. The more havoc they spread, the tighter the government restrictions against other radicals. Eddie Constantine, the sang-froid leading man of many a Lemmy Caution espionage film, is ironically cast in The Third Generation.

Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven (1975)
Frau Kusters is preparing dinner late one seemingly ordinary afternoon in her seemingly ordinary kitchen in Frankfurt, Germany. Mrs. Kusters wants to add canned sausages to the stew, her annoying daughter-in-law thinks otherwise. The point, we soon find out, is moot: Mr. Kusters has murdered the personnel director at the soap factory where he works before committing suicide.

The Third Generation (1979)
A mogul merrily funds terrorists to boost his computer sales, by panicking West German government and industry c. 1980, as the third generation of Western European left-wing activists forms, after crippling of the violent Red Army Faction. Released in 1979, largely unavailable until 2004. International kapitalist PJ Lurz's secretary is a gang member, while her Polizeikommissar father-in-law/lover hired Lurz' corporate security force.
