Sur La route (Big Drive)
From Anita Lebeau, director of the award-winning film Louise, comes Big Drive-the story of a family road trip across the Canadian prairies set in the 1970s. An exuberant exploration of
childhood imagination, Big Drive invites audiences of all ages to see the world as it appears 'from the back seat.' In an era before in-car movies and video games, four sisters squeeze into the back of the family car for a long journey. While the parents keep a steady watch on the road ahead, restlessness gradually gives way to mayhem in the car's close quarters. Just before the ride becomes unbearable, the sisters are inspired to combine their creative energy. Suddenly, the big drive becomes an even bigger adventure. A story about sisterhood and the impulse to create, Big Drive showcases Lebeau's signature blend of classical hand-drawn animation and photo-realistic images. The film is complemented by a lively score from Winnipeg composer Dan Frechette.

Les yeux noirs (Private EyeS)
Matthew has a secret power: he can see in the dark! He does it with the eyes hidden in his ears, his fingertips, his toes, his tongue, and even his nostrils. His keen senses don't miss a thing. Matthew is a super detective. His current mission is to find out what his parents are planning to give him for his birthday. Our intrepid investigator searches his room, his house and his neighbourhood. His clues are the sounds, smells, tastes and feel of everything around him. Matthew may be visually impaired but he has remarkable powers of observation and soon solves the mystery. Or so he thinks. Published in French by Soulières éditeur in 1999, Les yeux noirs was a big hit with kids and their parents, winning the Mr. Christie's Book Award. Some ten years later, author Gilles Tibo teams up with animator Nicola Lemay to give a new dimension to this charming story in an animated short that opens viewers' eyes to what it's like to live with a visual impairment.

55 chaussettes (55 Socks)
1944-45. The last winter of the war in occupied Holland. There's nothing to eat in the cities but a few turnips or tulip bulbs. During the long, cold winter of hunger, barter is the only way to survive. Having no alternative, a mother and her young daughter, and the two Jewish women they are secretly sheltering, decide to sacrifice a beautiful bedspread and use the wool to make socks. You never know, a farmer might be willing to trade a few morsels of food for warm feet. Over the next six days, they knit twenty-seven pairs of socks, plus one odd one. Loaded with these precious goods, the mother braves the brutality of the Nazi soldiers and the risk of confiscation, bicycling around the countryside in the hopes of feeding those waiting at home. Based on Maria Jacobs' poem of the same name, 55 Socks is a silhouette animation film by Oscar-winning director Co Hoedeman. It is a simple, touching story, the memory of a dark page in history that is reflected in Hoedeman's own childhood memories. It is his tribute to the courage and ingenuity of his Dutch compatriots.

Rose & Violet
Circus Igor has recruited a pair of new acrobats: Conjoined twins Rose and Violet. With their shared arm, the sisters whirl, twirl and fly in the footlights under the big top. They seem bound for glory, but when the world's strongest man joins the troupe, things get complicated. A performance turns to disaster and the unthinkable happens: Rose and Violet are separated. But the accident doesn't spell the end of their delirious acrobatic adventures. After a mad chase with twists and danger at every turn, the twins again find themselves face to face. Will they be able to overcome the jealousy that has come between them? In the strange yet engaging world of Rose & Violet, life can be cruel-but chickens play guitar, dogs dance the polka and people who love each other always get together in the end.

Waseteg
Waseteg is the story of a young Mi'gmaq girl whose name means 'the light from the dawn.' Sadly, her mother dies while giving birth and though her father works very hard to provide for his family, Waseteg is surrounded by the bitterness and loneliness felt by her sisters. As a young girl, Waseteg looks for solace in nature, and dreams of the stories she's heard in the village - including one about Walqwan, the mysterious boy living across the river. Eventually, with the gentle care of the boy's grandmother, Waseteg succeeds in finding Walqwan, discovering
the Spirit Path and restoring love to her family. A short story about dreams, courage, identity, creation and embracing our elders, Waseteg showcases Phyllis Grant's signature style of bold lines, bright colours and simple movements. The film is beautifully narrated by legendary filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin.

Higglety Pigglety pop ! ou la vie a sûrement plus à offrir (The three are Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life)
Once, Jennie had everything. She had two bowls to eat from, two pillows, and for cold weather, a red wool sweater. She even had a master who loved her. But Jennie didn't care. In the middle of the night, she packed everything she had in a black leather bag with gold buckles and looked out of her favorite window for the last time...

Citrouille et vieilles dentelles (PUMPKINS AND OLD LACE)
A photographer comes to a retirement home hoping to find a nice 'grandpa face' for a billboard poster. His visit will be full of surprises: brambles, giant pumpkin, snow and other weird events invade the house...

Dimanche (Sunday)
A small boy's Sunday is filled with both ordinary and extraordinary events.

CMYK
An experimental animated short by Vancouver-based director Marv Newland, CMYK celebrates sound, colour and movement. Newland and animator Kunal Sen assembled multitudes of CMYK symbols, turning them into moving artwork. Coloured dots pulsate chaotically and primary shapes dance compellingly, while the music by composer Lisa Miller and the Quatuor Bozzini quartet is equally spontaneous and unrestrained.

La formation des nuages (The Formation of Clouds)
Childhood is a private, fragile terrain in which the marks of our explorations are inscribed. A delicate, sensitive evocation of burgeoning desire, The Formation of Clouds follows the steps of a young girl in the midst of transformation, clearly delineating that odd moment when one is no longer a child, exactly, but not yet an adult either. Using the simplicity of pen and ink drawings with graceful superimposition effects on glossy paper, Marie-Hélène Turcotte succeeds in capturing all the nuances of this transitional stage, in which the ingenuous wish to remain a child accompanies the yearning for self-discovery. With grace and sensitivity, this first short film becomes a visual poem that plays out at the frontier between reality and imagination. Film without words.

Romance
Under the influence of a Rachmaninoff scherzo, a man follows his desires into the unknown, through a whirlwind of music and movement.

Imparfaite (Flawed)
This animated short from Andrea Dorfman traces a budding romance. But it's not about whether girl can get along with boy, it's about whether girl can accept herself.

Le souffle voilé des Bones (The Trembling Veil of Bones)
Inside a darkened studio filled with the sounds of ticking gears and cogs sits a solitary clockmaker, Bones. This peculiar character parcels out his time in teaspoons and shadow, until the arrival of a mysterious package propels him to leave his refuge. Director Matthew Talbot-Kelly's animated short film The Trembling Veil of Bones uses a combination of live action and computer-generated imagery to create a layered world of intrigue and revelation. An extraordinary amalgam of visual storytelling, sound design and animation, The Trembling Veil of Bones reinvents narrative language to trace a journey from isolation to fragile intimacy. As a convergence of events forces the clockmaker to confront the past, fate has plans in store for his future.

Oedipe (Oedipus)
Parodying the Greek myth and throwing in a bunch of well-known NFB-animated characters for good measure, director Paul Driessen offers up a backwards tragicomic version of the classic tale. Oedipus is Driessen at his absurdist best.

Les contes de Muybridge (Muybridge's Strings)
Can time be made to stand still? Can it be reversed? Koji Yamamura's Muybridge's Strings is a meditation on this theme, contrasting the worlds of the photographer Eadweard Muybridge -- who in 1878 successfully photographed consecu- tive phases in the movement of a galloping horse -- and a mother who, watching her daughter grow up, realizes she is slipping away from her. Moving between California and Tokyo, between the nineteenth century and the twenty-first, the film focuses on some of the high points in Muybridge's troubled life and intercuts them with the mother's surrealistic daydreams -- a poetic clash that explores the irrepressible human desire to seize life's fleeting moments, to freeze the instants of happiness. Enriched by Koji Yamamura's refined artistry and Normand Roger's soundtrack, Muybridge's Strings observes the ties that cease to bind, fixes its gaze on the course of life, and presents a moment in time suspended on the crystalline notes of a canon by J.S. Bach.

La tranchée (The Trenches)
A young man is preparing to fight at the front. On the battlefield and in the depths of the trenches, the recruits are dreading the order to attack. It's World War I. At the signal, the recruit leaps into a hell of fire and blood where the earth engulfs both the living and the dead. The short animated film The Trenches is an intense cinematic experience, an anti-war statement created through archival images that are masterfully contemporized by filmmaker Claude Cloutier's India ink and brush artistry.

Mamori
Mamori takes its title from a place in the Amazon forest. Lemieux tried to capture the textures of tropical vegetation and its various transformations according to the phenomena of light. The film's soundtrack is by Francisco López.

J'étais une enfant de survivants de l'Holocauste (I Was a Child of Holocaust Survivors)
Using the healing power of humour, the film probes the taboos around a very particular second-hand trauma, leading us to a more universal understanding of human experience. It explores identity and loss through the audacious proposition that the Holocaust is addictive and defining.

Le cirque (The Circus)
In the vestibule of a hospital room, a young boy waits to see his dying mother. The clamor and spiralling movements of bodies around him intensify, forming a grotesque circus-a cacophonous circle that pushes the child back, depriving him of one final touch of his mother's hand. Using rotoscoped drawings suggestive of charcoal sketches, as well as 3D and object animation techniques, The Circus compels viewing with its unsettling realism. Colour is employed metaphorically to subtly express the promise and the memory of maternal affection. Nicolas Brault's highly personal film, suffused with poetic modesty, casts a poignantly sincere gaze on the heartbreak of a child facing the fearful, mysterious experience of his mother's death.

Une vie sauvage (Wild Life)
n this animated short, writers, directors and animators, Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby, tell the story of an English dandy, who leaves the refinement and civility of England in the pursuit of adventure in the colonial territory of Alberta, Canada. Although his family believes that he is slowly transforming into a rough and tough rancher, based on his letters, nothing could be further from the truth. Despite living in the wilderness of Alberta, he is unable to leave behind his English customs and habits. He eventually falls victim to the harsh, unforgiving conditions of winter. The animation of this short is beautiful and the sound quality is excellent. Although it is an animated short, it does provide a brief look at the socioeconomic conditions of the English empire at the turn of the last century. However, despite the beautifully crafted animation, it is unclear as to where this particular film would fit within a library collection outside of media or film studies.

Les journaux de Lipsett (Lipsett Diaries)
The latest film from award-winning animator Theodore Ushev (Drux Flux) depicts the maelstrom of anguish that tormented Arthur Lipsett, a famed Canadian experimental filmmaker who died at the age of 49. His descent into depression and madness is explored through a series of images as well as sounds taken from Lipsett's own work.
