Synopsis:

It is 1988, a year before the fall of the Berlin Wall, and 17-year-old twins and best friends Doreen and Isabel (Friederike Becht and Luise Heyer), both successful oarswomen, are spending the summer at the placid Lake Balaton in the Soviet satellite state of Hungary. Yet the tranquility of their focused summer begins to crumble when Doreen falls for Arne (Franz Dinda), a young West German. Confronted with the first real instance of possible rupture in their relationship, and with the reality that the divided Germany of their childhood is about to radically change, Doreen and Isabel find themselves looking ahead to an uncertain future and the most momentous decision of their lives.

Doreen and Isabel are 17-year-old twins and rising East German rowers training at a summer camp in 1988 Hungary. Their future is challenged when Doreen falls for a West German boy. The Berlin Wall still stands, so will it be family or love?

As Robert Thalheim's new film Westwind begins, audiences see two teenaged sisters preparing to leave home for a Young Pioneer camp in Soviet Hungary in the summer of 1988. Although Dorle (Friederike Becht) and Isabel (Luise Heyer) are sororal rather than identical twins, as they have grown up they've developed a coded system of determining how to respond to life's challenges and risks.
