Synopsis:
Grazia's Island (2002)
In this Sicilian fable, a beautiful young mother living on a small island excites the disapproval of her fellow villagers with her carefree behavior. When her relatives suggest she need psychiatric treatment, her son must help her escape the condemnation of the town.

The Golden Door (2006)
Desperate and poor Southern Italian family seeks a way out, and, having heard reports of rivers running in milk and coins falling off of trees, leave their stony rural cottage and buy passage to America. The trip to the boat, aboard the boat, and at Ellis Island is one of wonder and hope and usually very little dialogue. A magical movie that succeeds in illustrating the other, humble, ordinary and tough passage to the new world without mafia dons or violence. The huge disadvantage of illiteracy is beautifully illustrated here, and the risks associated with leaving behind everything. Amazing, touching, real.

Mainland (2011)
A tight-knit family living on the island of Linosa, south of Sicily, find their ties stretched to the limit when a group of illegal immigrants from Africa appears in their community. Used to making their living from the ocean, the world is now encroaching in the form of tourism and the illegals forcing each member of the family to make choices.

Grazia's Island (2002)
In a small fishing village on Lampedusa, an island off western Sicily, life can be both heartwarming and suffocating. Grazia is an affectionate wife and young mother, but her free spirited attitude causes talk in the village. Her husband, Pietro, stands by his wife, but when Grazia's reckless behaviour becomes misinterpreted as clinical, his family decides she should be sent to Milan for medical treatment. Grazia tries to run away but is saved by her thirteen year-old son, Pasquale.

The Golden Door (2006)
The story is set at the beginning of the 20th century in Sicily. Salvatore, a very poor farmer, and a widower, decides to emigrate to the US with all his family, including his old mother. Before they embark, they meet Lucy. She is supposed to be a British lady and wants to come back to the States. Lucy, or Luce as Salvatore calls her, for unknown reasons wants to marry someone before to arrive to Ellis Island in New York. Salvatore accepts the proposal. Once they arrive in Ellis Island they spend the quarantine period trying to pass the examinations to be admitted to the States. Tests are not so simple for poor farmers coming from Sicily. Their destiny is in the hands of the custom officers.

Mainland (2011)
Two women, an Island dweller and a foreigner: one dramatically influences the life of the other. But they both share the same desire for a different future, a better life for their children and the dream of the mainland. Terraferma is the desired destination of those travelling by sea, but it may also turn out to be an island with its deep-rooted traditions. The Pucillo family has to come to terms with immobility: Ernesto is 70 years old and he'd do anything to avoid having to scrap his fishing boat. His grandson Filippo is 20. His father was lost at sea and he finds himself caught up 'in time' between his grandfather Ernest and his uncle Nino, who gave up fishing in favour of 'baiting' tourists. His young, widowed mother, Giulietta, senses that this island's frozen, immutable time has turned them all into strangers and that there is no future for her nor for her son Filippo. For there to be a future they must have the courage to leave. One day, the sea propels other travellers into their lives, among them Sara and her son. Ernesto gives them refuge: it is the ancient law of the sea. However, the new laws made by man does not allow this: the life of the Pucillo family is turned upside down and they are forced to change direction.
