Synopsis:

Attractive, educated and successful, Eloïse (Elsa Zylberstein) has it all, except for a long-term, stable romantic relationship. Now in her mid-30s, she can hear a certain clock ticking loudly. So she enrolls in a speed dating program. Seven men, seven women, pre-screened for compatibility. You have seven minutes to take the measure of each other before you both move on to other candidates. The Feelings Factory is a remarkable look at one variation of modern romance, a streamlined notion of courtship that gets past all the awkward preliminaries that seem to capsize such encounters. Zylberstein is perfect in the role: her self assurance and intelligence not to mention her sense of humor can always be felt, even as she reveals bits of her needs and vulnerabilities to potential suitors

Jean-Marc Moutout's The Feelings Factory (La Fabrique des sentiments) wants to be about life and love and all manner of profound things, but ends up as little more than a jumble of endless close-up reaction shots of French actress Elsa Zylberstein. Unfortunately, this lovely but usually supporting player doesn't have the screen presence or nuanced acting ability that the role demands, and she's not helped very much by unintentionally-ugly settings and an overly ambitious, but undeveloped and unfocused script.

A thirtysomething singleton turns to speed dating as an answer to her emotional emptiness in "The Feelings Factory," a quizzical relationships dramedy elevated by a terrif central performance by Elsa Zylberstein. Not so much an examination of the speed-dating phenom -- whose touchstone pic remains last year's shamefully ignored "Shoppen" by Ralf Westhoff -- this is more a look at New Millennium me-culture, but played sympathetically without grandstanding its social subtext. It's a solid bet for upscale auds on the foreign arthouse circuit.
