Synopsis:
Based on a true story, Gang Story (Les Lyonnais) is the epic tale of Edmond Vidal (Gérard Lanvin - Point Blank); one of the French underworld's most notorious figures having led the Gang des Lyonnais to a spate of successful armed robberies in the 1970s. Overcoming dangerous gang rivalries and battles with the police, Vidal survived to enjoy the good life...until now. With his life-long friend Serge Suttel (Tchéky Karyo - Bad Boys) in trouble, Vidal gets drawn into one last job. But fighting against his own history and facing a desperate situation, is this the end for Vidal? Taken from Edmond Vidal's book "Pour une poignée de cerises", Gang Story is a shocking, thrilling ride.

After growing up in a poor gypsy camp, Edmond Vidal, aka Momon, has retained a sense of family, unfailing loyalty and pride in his origins. Most of all, he has remained friends with Serge Suttel, with whom he first discovered prison life - for stealing cherries. The two of them inevitably got involved in organized crime. The team they formed, the Gang Des Lyonnais, made them the most notorious armed robbers of the early 1970s. Their irresistible rise ended in 1974 with a spectacular arrest. Today, as he nears 60, Momon would like to forget that part of his life. He has found peace by retiring from the 'business'. He tends to his wife Janou, who suffered so in the past, and to his children and grandchildren, all of whom have great respect for this man of simple and universal values, so clear-headed and full of kindness. But then Serge Suttel, who has disowned nothing of his past, comes back into the picture.

French cop-turned-director Olivier Marchal's flashback-heavy crime drama is very loosely based on the memoirs of real-life gangster Edmond "Mamon" Vidal. Here the ageing Mamon (played gracefully by Gérard Lanvin) flits between reflecting on his time as leader of the Lyons gang - a crew who pulled off a series of daring heists in the early 70s - and trying to protect his lifelong friend Serge (Tchéky Karyo), who's on the run from a rival mob boss. But there's little heat on Marchal's mean streets: we don't get to know any character other than Mamon, so his sense of betrayal is justified by default and his revenge is played out methodically over decades of boring murder. There's one code at play here: a hood's gotta do what a hood's gotta do. Unfortunately, we gotta watch him do all of it.
