Synopsis:
Where Once We Walked is the story of a love triangle between a young upper-class woman and two working class friends, and unfolds over the course of Finland's tumultuous independence. Throughout the film we see how the rise of Finnish nationalism influenced the lives of young Lucie and her suitors Eric and Allen, from the first World War, to the Finnish Civil War, to the fascist Lapua government preceding World War II. Originally airing on Finnish TV, this period piece features restrained, emotional performances from its cast. The decadent and intricately constructed sets and costumes serve to heighten the lovers' class and political divisions and add to the ever-present tensions that were rife throughout their Finland's maturation.

This film is set in Helsinki, spanning the times of rising nationalism during the first World War, the consequent Finnish civil war, the emerging 'modernity' of the 1920s, and the height of the fascist Lapua Movement in the early 1930s. A love triangle between Lucie, an upper class girl, and Eric a young middle class man and Allan a young working class man and socialist, takes center stage. Decisions taken in adolescence dictate the course of their lives, and all must face the consequences of their actions as they strive for atonement. In the end the story is also a declaration of love: a declaration of love to the memory of the people we once were, and the grounds where we once walked. (Based on Kjell Westö's award winning novel and true historical events.)

Finland is a small country, with some big history. During WWII, they forcibly ejected both the Soviets and the National Socialists from their territory, only give birth to the term Finlandization in the post-war years. An interconnected circle of friends and rivals will witness the tumultuous decades leading up to the Winter War in Peter Lindholm's Where Once We Walked
