Synopsis:
Upstairs Downstairs (2010)
In 1936, Sir Hallam Holland and his pretty young wife Lady Agnes return from a diplomatic posting abroad and take up residence at 165 Eaton Place, formerly the home of the Bellamy family but vacant for several years.

Jane Eyre (1997)
Charlotte Bronte's classic novel is filmed yet again. The story of the Yorkshire orphan who becomes a governess to a young French girl and finds love with the brooding lord of the manor is given a standard romantic flare, but sparks do not seem to happen between the two leads in this version.

Tess of the D'Urbervilles (2008)
Alec D'Urberville successfully seduces farmer's daughter Tess Durbeyfield, who ends up fleeing home dishonored. While doing menial job on a farm, she falls in true love with well-born cleric in training Angel Clare, who proposes although above her known station. In fact she belongs to an impoverished branch of nobility, but when her past catches up she leaves Angel, who emigrates. Later, he returns and they are reunited, but only for their ultimate tragedy.

This made-for-TV feature was the tenth screen adaptation of the classic Gothic romance by Charlotte Bronte. Jane Eyre (Samantha Morton, who two years later would earn an Oscar nomination for her performance in Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown) grew up an orphan under trying circumstances, but through hard work and determination, she has gained an education and is employed as a governess at the Thornfield Hall estate. Tess of the D'Urbervilles (2008)
In the late 19th century, Tess Durbeyfield is sent off to visit a rich cousin, Alec D'Urberville, when her parents learn learn that they are distantly related. Tess takes a disliking to the man and his attempts at seduction are rebuffed. Returning from a village party he forces himself on the innocent girl who eventually makes her way back to her parents' home. Ashamed and pregnant she seems destined to forever being marked a certain kind of woman. After the death of her child, she makes her way to a prosperous farm where, working as a milkmaid, she meets and eventually marries the handsome Angel Clare. On learning of her past however, he abandons her and with little choice and facing a life of extreme hardship, again falls into Alec's clutches and becomes a kept woman.

In 1936, Sir Hallam Holland and his pretty young wife Lady Agnes return from a diplomatic posting abroad and take up residence at 165 Eaton Place, formerly the home of the Bellamy family but vacant for several years. By chance, they ask Rose Buck, herself a long-time servant in the Bellamy household, to find them a suitable staff. In the end, Rose herself joins them as the Housekeeper. The 1930s are a difficult time in England. The Depression has taken its toll with high levels of unemployment. Fascism, which has become popular on the Continent in Italy and Germany, is also finding followers in the UK with Oswald Mosely's British Union of Fascists. As the new staff begin their daily work, the downstairs family begins to take shape.

His wife finally convinces daughter Tess to swallow her pride and seek help from the D'Urbervilles on a nearby estate. The heir, Alec D'Urberville, takes to her, arranges a job on the family's poultry farm and becomes her family's benefactor.

She is as smitten after accidentally seeing him sleeping in the buff.

Mercy won't have a bar of him, Retti would follow him but by her own admission she can't love him as much as Tess, so he makes up his mind to go alone. Tess returns home, then seeks another farm maid employ, accepting the worst job at Groby's, under his cruel, jealous bailiff.

After Alec gives up preaching in order to court Tess and father Darbeyfield is killed by illness, she writes a vicious letter to Angel rejecting him as 'cruel', which he never receives, and starts wandering. By the time he's home and healed, it's hard to find her. When he does, she's 'Alec's creature'. She now commits an irreparable crime which ruins all their lives after a last passionate phase.
