Synopsis:
There are few films on Emil Nolde although he is one of the major Expressionist painters. Nolde was a contemporary of Vincent Van Gogh and tackled painting with the same passion, with no frontier between the man and the painter. The canvas is the mirror of his emotions, just like the sea in which he contemplates his soul. The director Wilfried Hauke invites us to discover this fusion of the man with his work, the colors of which are so powerful that they become its real material. It is probably these colors, this material that German Fascism violently censored. Although he sympathized for a while with National Socialism, he was declared to be a "degenerate artist" by the Nazis in 1937 and forbidden to paint in 1941. He carried on in secret, mainly painting watercolors on paper in his studio home in Seebüll. It is in this house by the North Sea, between heaven and earth, that he painted till his death in 1956.
