Synopsis:
The voyage aboard La Korrigane in the South Seas (1934-1936) is the stuff of legends. Undertaken by five well-to-do young people, keen for adventure but eager to render service to the science of anthropology, this was the last ethnological expedition that may claim to have returned to France from then unexplored territories with over 2,500 truly genuine artefacts. The finest of these objects were shown in the Musée de l'Homme in Paris, when it opened in 1937. Nearly 800 of them are now prize exhibits in the Quai Branly Museum. In 2005, the film-maker Jean-Paul Fargier teamed up with the ethnologist Christian Coiffier and followed part of the route taken by the expedition to assess its importance and experience its hardships. The film shows them in a pirogue coming back from the remotest regions visited by the passengers of La Korrigane. On the banks of the Middle Sepik River (Papua New Guinea), they met the descendants of the artists and craftsmen who had sold their works to the young French people. The Papuans had not forgotten. The bonds of friendship were renewed and time suddenly stood still. Their art is still as vibrant as in days gone by, its hidden meaning suddenly revealed from the other side of myth.
