Synopsis:
Based on John Kennedy Toole's semi-autobiographical novel of the same title, Terence Davies transposes his trademark style onto celluloid inspired by a book that he undoubtedly identified with. The character of David, an isolated and naive boy growing up in the Bible Belt during the 40s is a wonderful accompaniment to Davies' own autobiographical alter egos of his earlier films. Davies himself was raised by the women of his family, whose life like David's was made better by the death of his father. Unfortunately, David's mother spirals into a depressive state of madness and his eccentric aunt with whom he has become a great friend and confidant to leaves to pursue a career in the entertainment business.

While on a train, a teenage boy thinks about his life and the flamboyant aunt whose friendship acted as an emotional shield from his troubled family. This film evokes the haunting quality of memory while creating a heartfelt portrait of a boy's life in a rural 1940s Southern town.
