Synopsis:
Adapted from Russell Braddons bestseller, End Play is a gripping, Hitchcockian-style Aussie thriller about a serial killer preying on young and attractive female hitch hikers in a small coastal community. Two brothers find themselves in the middle of a grisly murder investigation, with the shadow of suspicion cast sharply across paraplegic Robert Gifford (George Mallaby) and Mark (John Waters). Bonded by blood, the brothers remain fiercely protective of each other, but when the police begin to close in, loyalty soon gives way to desperation and deception. Also featuring Belinda Giblin, Delvene Delaney, Charles Bud Tingwell and Sheila Florence, End Play racks up the tension and delivers a spine-tingling whodunit in the classic Ozploitation tradition.

This is a relatively unusual film both in Tim Burstall's career and Australian film. Adapted by Burstall from a murder mystery by English writer, Russell Braddon, it both looks and feels like an English film bar a few location shots and the fact that the cast are Australian. Largely a two hander centred on the oddly-co-dependant relationship between two foster brothers, (George Mallaby and John Waters in his first feature film) it is located in an English-style country home, complete with baronial décor and manicured grounds (and note those significant art prints on the wall) and features a politely persistent Detective Inspector (Ken Goodlet) who keeps entering stage left at telling moments. The opening scene, with a gum-chewing Delvene Delaney is inauspicious but it develops into a decent Sleuth-like game of trying to work out who's doing what to whom. Peter Best contributes an effective score and Linda George sings over the opening credits.

Hitchhiker Janine Talbort is picked up and murdered by an unseen assailant. Mark Gifford, a merchant sailor on leave, then disposes of the body, attracting the suspicion of his wheelchair bound brother Robert. The police become suspicious of both brothers, who are rivals over their half-cousin, Margaret.
