Synopsis:
Despite its impressive history and its reputation, the international trading company Struan's (the Noble House of the title) is in trouble. Overextended by the previous management, new Tai-Pan Ian Dunross (Pierce Brosnan) has had to issue public stock to improve the company's financial standing. Even this, however, has not given him the capital he needs. As a result he is courting a private investor, American billionaire Linc Bartlett (Ben Masters). Bartlett decides secretly to back Dunross' arch enemy, Quillian Gornt (John Rhys-Davies), who will stop at nothing to destroy Struan's. When Dunross realises that Gornt is suddenly strong enough to ruin the Noble House, he must urgently forge new alliances or reshape ancient ones. He romances Bartlett's second-in-command, Casey Tcholok (Deborah Raffin). A subplot involves the missing half of an ancient coin. Whoever possesses it may ask any favour of the Tai-Pan. Half the coin is acquired by crime lord Four Finger Wu (Khigh Dhiegh), who aims to ask the Tai-Pan to help him smuggle opium. Wu and Bartlett are killed in a natural disaster. Wu's son redeems his father's stolen half-coin for a highly-paid position in Noble House. Dunross gains access to the Bank of China, whose funding allows him to foil Gornt's scheme. Tcholok becomes head of Bartlett's company, allying the organization with Struan's.

Ian Struan Dunross is chairman of Struan & Co, the oldest and largest of the British-East Asia trading companies. To the Chinese, that also makes him 'Tai-Pan' ('supreme leader') of the 'Noble House'. Unfortunately, with his power, he inherits ancient promises, dark secrets and deep financial problems on a small island full of people who want to see Struan's fall so they can become the Noble House. Dunross' worst enemy is the vicious Quillan Gornt, a lesser tai-pan, and he's doing everything in his power to bring the Noble House to ruin. Drawn into the fight between Gornt and Dunross is an upstart American billionaire who tries to gain a foothold on the Hong Kong market and has made a deal to steal something that will give him power, even over the Noble House. Unfortunately, that something has fallen into the hands of a powerful Chinese overlord. 'Everybody was watching [and cheating on] everybody.' Who will succeed in the end?

James Clavell's blockbuster novel of rivalry, extortion, and murder comes to particularly splashy life in this 1988 NBC miniseries that is set in the high-stakes business world of Hong Kong, where it was largely filmed. Pierce Brosnan is Ian Dunross, just named the tai-pan (CEO) of the powerful Anglo-Asian trading company Struan & Co. Before the champagne has stopped bubbling, a nasty piece of work named Quillan Gornt (played with relish by Indy 4's most notable absentee, John Rhys-Davies) targets Struan for a hostile takeover. Suddenly plunged into a criminal underworld of international espionage, deception, and financial crises, Dunross turns up the heat by engaging in a dangerous romance with his nemesis' aide (Deborah Raffin). But with danger lurking around every corner, Dunross ultimately sees he has no choice but to fight for his company's honor and survival.
