Synopsis:
Post-glasnost jewel of the Eastern European crown, the Balkan state of Slaka is a tasty treat on The Gravy Train. Newly-liberated after years of Communist control, the little nation wants to embrace the European Community and share its bountiful fruits of capitalism and the free market. Animosity between the East and West is now a thing of the past, so why is Slaka's entry into the E.C. so hotly-contested - enthusiastically encouraged by the Deputy President of the EC and violently opposed by the British Government? The Balkan state's economic and political disarray makes E.C. entry unlikely, but perhaps only one man can perform the required economic miracle in Salaka - the nave, bungling European dogsbody Hans Dorfmann (Christop Waltz).
Confounded and manipulated by all parties, he finds himself out in the cold and expelled from Slaka - but doggedly in pursuit of the state's missing fortune! Filmed on location in England, Austria, Germany, Hungary and Belgium, this 2 DVD set includes all 4 parts of Malcolm Bradbury's The Gravy Train Goes East starring acclaimed actor Sir Ian Richardson (House of Cards), with Christoph Waltz, Francesca Annis (Reckless), Jeremy Child, Roger Lloyd-Pack (Only Fools And Horses), Maggie Steed (Pie In The Sky) and Judy Parfitt (Yes Minister).

Like fish bait cast into a pool of sharks, idealistic Dorfmann (Christoph Waltz) arrives in Brussels with visions of a united Europe to serve an ambitious British Director of the European Economic Community, Michael Spearpoint (Ian Richardson). Planning to get rich exploiting the newly-liberated nations of Eastern Europe, wily bureaucrats and entrepreneurs compete to misuse the naïve Dorfmann, dubbed 'Prince Stupid,' for their own ends. Easily deceived (especially by beautiful women!), Dorfmann instead stumbles along, crisscrossing foes, drawing fire and sparking mayhem in a comically woven web of intrigue and misadventure! Also stars Alexei Sayle and Almanta Suska.

This four-part British miniseries was a sequel to Malcolm Bradbury's 1990 TV effort The Gravy Train. Christoph Waltz returned to the role of Dorfman, a terminally idealistic member of the European Economic Council. This time around, the teeny-tiny Balkan state of Slaka hoped to join the Council in hopes of supping from the same public-fund trough as the rest of the European nations. It was up to Dorfman to cast the deciding 'yea' or 'nay' vote. The Gravy Train Goes West was seen over Britain's Channel Four from October 28 to November 18, 1991.
