Synopsis:

Tilda Swinton (Orlando), in the most provocative performance of her career, portrays high-powered attorney Eve Stephens, who is up for appointment as a judge. But below Eves veneer of self-confidence, there is a darker side. She is driven by bizarre visions, wild sexual fantasies and insatiable desire. Not satisfied by her relationship with her lover, John (Clancy Brown), she seduces Renee (Karen Sillas), a psychiatrist who has just moved into Eves office building. Adding to Eves anxiety is her replacement, the attractive Langley (Paulina Porizcova) who Eve sees as a threat to her power and beauty.

Dresses, lipsticks, sex - the 'perversions' (and neuroses) of Eve, a young, very successful lawyer. Her days are a tightrope act between extreme eloquence and frosty toughness on the one side, and scaring vulnerability on the other. The climax of her career shall be the possibly forthcoming appointment as a judge, but this step seems to be interrupted by her kleptomaniac sister Mad who is arrested after one of her raids. Eve travels to Mad's town to stand by her in the jail. Their struggle about Mad's illness evokes suppressed conflicts. Eve stays at her sister's flat where she meets a girl who fights with her budding femininity.

The story centres on a high-powered female lawyer played - for the most part convincingly - by Tilda Swinton. The themes dealt with as the film unfolds are control, sexual desire, self-doubt, sibling relationship and self-destruction. Incidental to this is the main character's open bisexuality.
