Synopsis:
This is a movie about the city where we come from. The city is named Linz. The 'Steel-City'. If cities were judged by their underground scenes, Linz would be called a metropolis. Since the late 1970s the Steel-City's music-scene is unique in its innovative powers and its non-compliant ways. The documentary 'Es muss was geben' (There's got to be something) portrays the beginnings of the scene over two decades, inspired by Andreas Kumps' book of the same title. From Willi Warma to Texta, from Attwenger to Fuckhead, from Punk to Hip Hop, from New Folk Music to Industrial - Linz proves itself as a melting pot for most differing musical styles. The portrait of a city in change, where not only the blast furnaces run on full power.

If cities were judged by their underground, Linz would be a metropolis. Since the late seventies, the music scene of the Austrian steel city has been unique in its spirit of innovation and its non-conformity. The documentary ES MUSS WAS GEBEN portrays the emergence and development of the scene over two decades. From punk to hip hop, from New Volksmusik to industrial, Linz proves to be a melting pot for the most diverse musical styles. A portrait of a city on the move, where not only the blast furnaces are hot.

In 1981, Willi Warma sang, 'Steel city kids live way too fast'. And sure enough, for a long time nothing could go fast enough for the residents in Linz in regards to subculture, underground, and „amateur music'. They played, drank, and partied - raw and somehow real. In subjective, romanticized memories a naturally nostalgic picture unfolds of short?lived (utopian) music and youth culture.
