Television is never better than when it goes wrong. The wronger it is, the better it gets. Micallef Tonight was so wrong it was wonderful. Wrong, because Nine had no idea what they wanted, much less what they were getting. Wrong, because, until he walked on-set for his first show, Shaun had never done live television. Or interviews. Wrong, because it gave Francis Greenslades knee ideas above its station. Wrong, for a thousand reasons, every one of them lovingly preserved on this DVD. Like the old aunt you smothered with a pillow because you loved her too much but couldn't stand the gurgling, Micallef Tonight stays with us, both as warm memory and dark secret.
