Synopsis:
Ivan Bibic returns to his Pittsburgh PA suburb after surviving a Japanse POW camp, causing regular nightmares. All the time he remained faithfully devoted to his childhood love, fellow ethnic Yugoslavian virgin Maria Bosic. She dates him again, thus ruining a virtual engagement to captain Al Griselli. Against Ivan's dad's advice, they get married. But Ivan became psychologically impotent, feels unworthy of her and starts wondering, even looking for another girl. Meanwhile slick guitar-and-song-busker Clarence Butts moves in to South-Western PA, and seduces Maria.

When her teenage sweetheart Ivan (John Savage) returns home from WWII, Maria (Nastassja Kinski) eagerly accepts his marriage proposal, looking forward to a lifetime of happiness. But her joy is short-lived when Ivan's dark past shrouds their wedding night in misery, driving a wedge between them that neither knows how to remove.

Drama set in post-war Pennsylvania. Ivan Bibic returns from the war and his internment in a Japanese prison camp, planning to marry his childhood sweetheart Maria. When the marriage fails due to Ivan's inability to consummate it, Maria takes up with another man and becomes pregnant by him.
