Synopsis:
In one of the poorest suburbs of Palermo, Sicily - blighted by the Camorra gangs of the kind rendered in Gomorrah - a young girl is fatally wounded when caught in the crossfire of a gangster shooting. Promised extensive government compensation, the girl's family, headed by its scrap merchant-scavenger father (amazingly embodied by the ubiquitous Toni Servillo), the family starts advance spending of its supposed riches and even more catastrophe ensues. An operatic, grotesque, grand guignol drama, dripping with venomous black humour and featuring a shocking denouement, It Was the Son is an astonishingly original, first solo directorial feature from cinematographer Ciprì (who also photographed Bellocchio's Dormant Beauty) since he parted company with his long term creative partner, Maresco.

The Ciraulo family lives in the miserable district of Palermo called "Zen". When one of their children dies in a shootout between mafia gangsters they receive compensation and buy a luxury black Volvo. Things go wrong when Trancredi, another son, takes the car out and damages the car door.

A lonely old man (Alfredo Castro) sits in a post office with a plastic bag waiting his turn. While he sits, he tells stories. One story in particular seems to obsess him, that of the Ciraulo family. Living a hand to mouth existence in an already crumbling high rise on the outskirts of Palermo, Sicily, the family is ruled by Nicola (Tony Servillio), who works hard to scavenge a living and takes occasional pleasure in taking his wife Loredana (Giselda Volodi) and his beloved daughter Serenella (Alessia Zammitti) and his gormless son Tancredi (Fabrizio Falco) to the sea, along with his own elderly parents who also live with them.
