Synopsis:
The man trapped by his brother, King Louis XIV of France, in a brutal iron mask is Philippe, assumed dead twin to the King who, though the rightful heir to the throne, was spirited into obscurity from birth for political motives, and is ignorant of his true identity. His destiny: to assume the throne in place of his brother, Louis, who is manipulated by Fouquet. Both the captain of the musketeers, D'Artagnan, and Colbert , the king's Minister for Home Affairs, are determined that France has her real King, and plan to restore the wilting fortunes of the throne by substituting Philippe for the King. The plan succeeds. Phillipe is thoroughly schooled in the ways of the King and, on the night of a grand costume ball, the King's men are tricked into imprisoning King Louis, condemning him to a life encased in the mask of iron, and placing Phillipe on the throne.

The title character is Philippe (Richard Chamberlain), claimant to the throne of France. Supporters of Philippe's vile twin brother, King Louis XIV also Chamberlain, kidnap Philippe, lock him in a dungeon, and obscure his identity with an iron mask. But aging D'Artagnan (Louis Jourdan), who'd virtually raised Philippe from boyhood, reunites his old musketeer cohorts to rescue Philippe, overthrow the wicked Louis, and place the "rightful heir" on the throne.

The story of Louis XIV of France and his attempts to keep his identical twin brother Philippe imprisoned away from sight and knowledge of the public, and Philippe's rescue by the aging Musketeers, led by D'Artagnan.
