Synopsis:
Before Sunrise is a passionate and intelligent romance between a young American (Jesse) and a French student (Celine). A chance encounter on the train incites intrigue, and Jesse provocatively suggests that Celine postpones her return to France and embarks instead on a spontaneous expedition to Vienna. In the course of their 14-hour relationship, the two share in their love for the unrehearsed and their appreciation for the unexpected as they explore in a powerful meeting of hearts and minds. Dawn breaks. Sad in silence, they make their way to the station. As they bid each other farewell, Jesse is seized by another impulse - another encounter ?

With Slacker and Dazed and Confused, Richard Linklater established himself as one of the more perceptive directors to delve into young adult experience in the last decades of the 20th century. With Before Sunrise, he went a step further, proving himself capable of exposing the soulful poignancy lurking at the heart of Gen-X affectation. An unapologetically dialogue-driven movie, Before Sunrise avoids the usual pitfalls associated with excessive talk, thanks to Linklater's insightful, heartfelt screenplay and winning performances from Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Delpy is engagingly easy-going, giving the feeling that she's ready for anything, and Hawke radiates surprising charm as the prototypical American abroad. He and Delpy are always entertaining, so that, rather than craving action, we want the two to keep talking, and come to regret the imminent sunrise almost as much as they do.

When a young American (Ethan Hawke) traveling through Europe by train meets a beautiful French student (Julie Delpy), he convinces her to spend the day with him in Vienna so the two can get to know each other better. They spend their day exploring the city and before they know it, they find themselves falling in love. Richard Linklater's romantic daydream is a warm and witty comedy that uses the beautiful streets of Vienna as a perfect backdrop for the characters' youthful, budding romance.
