Synopsis:
This exquisite, Oscar-nominated French-Vietnamese arthouse classic from 1993 begins in the 1950s and ends during the early years of the Vietnam War. The story follows a 10-year-old orphan girl named Mui, who arrives in a wealthy Saigon house to work as a servant. As she grows into a beautiful young woman, Mui is quietly and carefully observant of everything around her, from the scent of green papaya to the sexual intrigues of her employers. As a graceful 20-year-old she becomes a devoted servant to the handsome musician she has admired since girlhood, and is soon drawn into his forbidden world.

Tran Anh Hung's beautiful and intoxicating film begins in Saigon in 1951. Ten year old Mui takes up her position as servant to a wealthy though troubled family. She performs her duties with great diligence, while carefully observing and taking great pleasure from the smallest details of life around her. Ten years later her life changes when she is sent to work for a family friend who had always held a fascination for her. The Scent of Green Papaya is filled with stunning images and subtle observations and has won the hearts of critics and audiences alike.

A little girl, Mui, went to a house as a new servant. The mother still mourns the death of her daughter, who would have been Mui's age. In her mind she treated Mui as her daughter. 10 years later Mui (now a young woman) was sent to another family, a young pianist and his wife. The musician falls in love with the peasant, he taught her literacy and they eventually married. A movie about a girl's life.
