Synopsis:
A second volume of our acclaimed series. Second Run DVD proudly presents three celebrated works of Polish Cinema, now fully restored and released for the first time ever in the UK.
Andrzej Wajda PROMISED LAND (Ziemia obiecana, 1974):
Voted the best film in the history of Polish cinema in the monthly Polish magazine FILM, Wajda's Oscar-nominated epic Promised Land is a wry, incisive, shocking and elegantly realised Dickensian tale of greed, human cruelty, exploitation and betrayal.
Krzysztof Zanussi - ILLUMINATION (Iluminacja, 1973):
Zanussi's philosophical/scientific exploration of man's place in the world. Illumination serves as an idiosyncratic, engaging, and insightful fusion of science and art, precision and creativity, intellect and emotion.
Wojciech Marczewski - ESCAPE FROM 'LIBERTY' CINEMA (Ucieczka z kina 'Wolnosc', 1990):
Marczewski's engaging anti-communist satire (with shades of Keaton's Sherlock, Jr. and Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo) is a darkly comic, complex, allusive and deeply-felt examination of the nature and effects of censorship, directed by one of Poland's leading intellectual - and much censored - filmmakers.
All three films are presented in new HD digital transfers with restored picture and sound, approved by the filmmakers, and will feature newly filmed, exclusive interviews with directors Andrzej Wajda, Wojciech Marczewski and Krzysztof Zanussi.

The Promised Land (1975)
At the turn of the century, Lodz, Poland was a quick-paced manufacturing center for textiles, replete with cutthroat industrialists and unsafe working conditions. Three young friends, a Pole, a Jew and a German, pool their money together to build a factory. The movie follows their ruthless pursuit of fortune.

The Illumination (1973)
Illuminacja follows the education of a young man from his entry into college to his final achievement of a doctorate. Paralleling his outer education, his inner education about life, family, sexuality and spiritual values is revealed. By the time he achieves his doctorate, he has been told that he has a life-shortening heart disease. However, because of his two-fold education, he is fulfilled in what he has done and is not much distressed. This Polish film, by the notable director Krzysztof Zanussi, won many awards at Italian film festivals.

Escape from the 'Liberty' Cinema (1990)
The film is set just before Poland's communist regime came to an end, and the central character is a provincial censor (Janusz Gajos), a tired, sloppy, lonely man, whose wife has long since left him. For him, censorship is both an art and a game, but he does not enjoy it. During the screeing of a sentimental Polish melodrama called 'Daybreak' at the Liberty cinema across the road from the censor's office, the actors start to rebel and refuse to speak their lines. This is anarchy, and when the censor is unable to control the situation, senior party officials are called in. Eventually a film critic notes that the situation reminds of 'The Purple Rose of Cairo' by Woody Allen and brings a reel of the film to demonstrate. The officials watch the film with amusement until another mix-up occurs: the second projector is turned on accidentally and superimposes 'Daybreak' over 'Purple Rose'.
