Synopsis:

A resounding success over five series, this Thames comedy - created by sitcom veteran Brian Cooke and starring Robert Gillespie and Black Beauty star Stacy Dorning - is set in the delightfully chaotic home of Dudley and Muriel Rush, whose daughters Jacqui and Susan occupy the family's basement flat. Dudley, a gifted cartoonist and illustrator but an inveterate procrastinator, finds it hard to concentrate amid an ever-increasing number of distractions - to the despair of his long-suffering boss, Duncan. This final series sees Dudley and the girls fending for themselves, with Muriel in Australia visiting her mother. Jacqui starts a job, and Dudley busies himself by converting the loft into an attic studio; since there's now room to spare and he's getting a little lonely without Muriel, Dudley thinks having his boss to stay is a splendid idea. Duncan, however, soon has reason to regret his decision…

Dudley Rush is an artist with a difference! Eccentric and childlike, he insists, among other things, on wearing his large-sized lion ventriloquist glove puppet on his hand whenever he draws the comic strip "Barney, The Bionic Bulldog". As Dudley is not at all happy with having to spend what he considers valuable time working, he is always procrastinating, with this often leading to his being late in meeting the 'dead-line' for the comic strip - to the continuing frustration of his long-suffering agent, Duncan Thomas (who often falls victim to Dudley's practical jokes). Duncan frequently visits the Rush family home to collect Dudley's latest drawings, and, as it is quite obvious that he is strongly attracted to Dudley's attractive wife Muriel, this often leads to bouts of excessive jealousy on Dudley's part. As Duncan also delightedly consumes an excessive number of Muriel's delicious cakes whenever he visits the Rush family home, this is an added source of annoyance for Dudley. With Dudley, Muriel, and their attractive daughters, Jackie and Susan, all being blessed with a wonderfully weird and ready wit all their own, life in the Rush family home is always lively and never dull.
