Synopsis:

In the tradition of Arsenic and Old Lace, comes this morbidly funny Australian tale of murder and mayhem at the hands of two charming old ladies. The two impoverished widows, Flo and Minnie lead quiet lives in their ramshackle apartment above an antique shop. They augment their meager income by shoplifting food and stealing small electrical appliances. So far they have not been caught, but to find a steadier source of income, they decide to let out a spare room. Two men show up to apply for the space; one is fugitive-criminal, Grubb, and the other is Instep, a police officer nearing retirement. The ladies scramble to keep Grubb and Instep apart for they fear that the criminal will tell the cop about their own crimes. Unfortunately, the cop adjusts the gas heater in the room and accidentally kills Grubb. Flo and Minnie decide to dispose of Grubb by chopping him up and storing his remains in their refrigerator. Later, Instep, who is in love with Minnie, decides to impress her by extracting a roast from the fridge and preparing it for Sunday dinner. Later they end up cooking the rest of the late Grubb and feeding him to their chickens, which miraculously begin laying remarkable eggs and breeding rapidly. The birds' droppings prove to be exceptional fertilizer for the ladies' mushrooms.

A deliciously dark gastronomic comedy, Mushrooms is an Aussie dish of home-style cooking destined to leave an altogether unique aftertaste. Looking for refuge from the police, an on-the-run thief stumbles into the residence of elderly charmers Flo (Julia Blake) and Minnie (Lynette Curran). Making inroads on the investigation and hot on the thief's trail, Officer Instep (Simon Chilvers) also encounters the humble ladies' hospitality and takes up lodgings in the next room - severely complicating any escape plans. But when a gas leak in the fugitive's room causes his untimely demise - Flo and Minnie, with a larcenous history of their own, will do everything in their power to keep the death of their harboured criminal under wraps from the veteran sergeant-in-residence...even if it comes to cooking up a few new recipes. A thief with a large amount of cash dies at a bed and breakfast owned by two elderly women. They decide to keep the money but disposing of the body proves extremely difficult because due to their own phobias and hang-ups, the ladies cannot leave their house for long periods of time. They devise a way to dispose of the body without ever leaving the house. The situation is further complicated when an investigator begins sniffing around and decides to stay a few nights in the bed and breakfast.
