Synopsis:
Armchair Cinema was one of the first projects undertaken by Thames Television's Euston Films subsidiary. Based on the format of the hugely successful and influential Armchair Theatre, Armchair Cinema presented a series of individual film dramas and is perhaps best remembered for one ground-breaking and phenomenally successful film - Regan, which introduced John Thaw and Dennis Waterman's maverick Flying Squad detectives, gaining a huge audience and leading to the commissioning of The Sweeney. The standard of drama offered by the series was consistently high; its flexibility and scope attracted some of the best contemporary television writers, and every film showcased the talents of first-class performers - including John Thaw, Edward Woodward, Anthony Valentine and Tom Bell. This five disc set also includes Suspect and Rumour - two Thames Television filmed plays by Mike Hodges which were a dry run for the Euston Films style - alongside The Sailor's Return and Charlie Muffin, two standalone television movies made by Euston Films. List of Films: Regan (1974) Suspect (1969) Rumour (1970) The Sailor's Return (1978) Charlie Muffin (1979)

Regan (1974)
This one-off TV play became the pilot episode of the British police series 'The Sweeney', and introduced the tough detective Jack Regan, whose hard, unconventional methods of detection bring him more trouble from his bosses than from criminals.

Suspect (1969)
A proud woman coldly concentrates on keeping up appearances when her 50-year old husband and a young schoolgirl go missing at the same time.

Rumour (1970)
A journalist stumbles onto a political conspiracy.

The Sailor's Return (1978)
Based on a novel by David Garnett, Sailor's Return is a British Victorian-era domestic drama, with plenty of domesticity and precious little drama. Tom Bell stars as a sailor who returns to his home village with his new bride (Shope Soleinde). The bride is black; the village is aghast. Struggling against the prejudice of the townsfolk and his own doubts about the wisdom of his union, Bell opens a pub. No distributor wanted to have anything to do with Sailor's Return, a dilemma due less to the film's subject matter than to its production ineptitudes. The film finally got its first showing on British television, two years after its completion.

Charlie Muffin (1979)
Charlie Muffin, top British Intelligence operative, has just broken up a major Soviet spy network in England. However, a new Director with new ideas takes over and wants Charlie out. But then a high-ranking Soviet spy-master hints that he wants to defect, and both British Intelligence and the CIA want him and will do anything to get him. Charlie may be the only man who can bring the defection off successfully, but is the whole thing an elaborate set-up? And when your so-called allies are stabbing each other and you in the back to get this prize, whom can Charlie trust on either side?
