André Delvaux. Life and Work: A DVD containing lesser-known short films and documentaries, together with interviews with Delvaux collaborators and a portrait of the filmmaker

De man die zijn haar kort liet knippen / The Man Who Had His Hair Cut Short (1965)
André Delvaux's debut film and a classic Flemish magic realistic film. The screenplay is an adaptation of the novel by author Johan Daisne. The leading character is lawyer Govert Miereveld, who teaches at a girls' school in a provincial town. He is secretly in love, in a platonic way, with his pupil Fran. This results in him plunging into a downwards spiral of mental desperation.

Rendez-vous à Bray / Appointment in Bray (1971)
December 1917. Julien, a young man from Luxembourg who lives in Paris, is on his way to Bray at the invitation of his friend Jacques Neuil. At La Fougeraie, a small house in a neglected park, the door is opened by a beautiful young woman with thick black hair. Jacques has not arrived yet... The waiting starts. Julien loses himself in memories of their friendship. When night falls, the young woman reappears. Then he starts to wonder...Who is this woman? How come Jacques has still not arrived? He begins to feel uneasy, even vaguely afraid. In the leading roles: Mathieu Carrière, Roger Van Hool, Anna Karina, Bulle Ogier.

Belle (1973)
Mathieu Grégoire is an esteemed author who lives in Spa with his wife and daughter and leads a carefully structured life. One day while out walking in the desolate landscape of the High Fens he meets a mysterious woman whom he calls 'Belle'. An obsessive passion is kindled in Mathieu and in a short space of time he loses all control over his existence. Initially able to keep his love affair a secret from the outside world, after a while he struggles to do so and, gradually, ever-larger cracks appear in his respectable, middle-class existence.

Femme entre chien et loup / Woman in a Twilight Garden (1979)
Antwerp 1940. Lieve marries Adriaan, a Flemish nationalist who enrols as collaborator on the Eastern Front. During his absence she falls passionately in love with resistance member François. After the liberation, she nonetheless chooses to stay with her husband. Faithfulness and treason play up against the social backdrop of hypocrisy and mediocrity. Eventually, Lieve will turn her back on the two men. The main characters in André Delvaux' most political film are interpreted by Marie-Christine Barrault, Rutger Hauer and Roger Van Hool.

Benvenuta (1983)
Jeanne, who once wrote a sensational love story of a young pianist on a concert tour of Italy where she meets a handsome older magistrate, now lives as a recluse in Ghent. She receives a visit from François, a young screenwriter adapting the story. He wants to fill out the script with details. Jeanne first refuses to identify herself with the main characters Benvenuta and Livio, whom she insists are purely fictional. But François is determined to find out the truth that lies beneath the fiction. Based on the novel La confession anonyme by Suzanne Lilar, with leading parts for Fanny Ardant, Vittorio Gassman, Mathieu Carrière and the music of Frederic Devreese.

L'oeuvre au noir / The Abyss (1988)
Flanders during the Inquisition and the religious turmoil of the 16th century. Zeno, a doctor and alchemist wanted for his subversive writings, has been wandering about Europe for 20 years under an assumed name. He returns to Bruges, his birthplace, hoping everyone has forgotten him there. But he is a non-conformist at heart. In the peaceful labyrinth-like city, faces from the past return. He rediscovers his identity and thus signs his death warrant. Based on the novel by Marguerite Yourcenar.

André Delvaux. Life and Work
André Delvaux. Life and work seeks out the lesser known aspects of André Delvaux's work: his short films and documentaries, which demonstrate more clearly than his feature films his commitment to spreading the arts and culture. From the mid fifties Delvaux made fifty films together with his students at the Athénée Fernand Blum school in Schaarbeek. As a documentary-maker he focuses mainly on other film-makers and Delvaux himself can also be seen and heard. Together with a number of colleagues we look back on the significance of a unique Belgian film oeuvre.
