Synopsis:

Forty-something Irene had a dream job that made her life easy: she was indeed a luxury hotel inspector and her work got carried out in a wonderful ever-renewed setting, from Paris to Gstaad to Berlin to Morocco to China... But does a dream job necessarily mean a dream life? Irene tried not to ask herself the question too openly. Yes she was single but she had manged to remain on good terms with Andrea, her former life companion. For sure she was childless but she occasionally took care of her two little nieces. And it was such fun to play the mystery guest in those magnificent hotels... Things could have gone on that way hadn't one day Irene met Kate Sherman...

The remarkable Margherita Buy - who won the David di Donatello award (the Italian Oscar®) for this performance - is utterly compelling as Irene, a blithely solipsistic single woman in her 40s whose job consists of sternly and fastidiously evaluating, and roundly criticizing, European five-star hotels and resorts. Oblivious to the sterile emptiness of her existence - an emptiness that is treated with equal doses of humor and pathos by director Maria Sole Tognazzi's expert hand - Irene finally begins to question things when confronted by her only friend Andrea's (Stefano Accorsi) news that he has gotten his latest one-night stand pregnant. Her initial response is to take on even more work, but a trip to Morocco may end up changing her self-administered solitary life.

Irene (Margherita Buy, winner of the David di Donatello Award for Best Actress) has a dream job: traveling through Europe to test the service at The Leading Hotels of the World's 5-star establishments. Yet in the lap of that luxury, she is alone. The film was awarded the Nastro d'Argento as Best Comedy by the Italian film critics union (S.N.G.C.I.).
