Synopsis:
It's 1906. The young, aristocratic beauty, Natalia Solario (Marie Féret), is on a long late-summer holiday at a luxury Swiss-Italian hotel on Lake Como. Englishman Bernard Middleton, freshly graduated from university, arrives at the resort and quickly falls under the spell of the enigmatic divorcee, rumoured to be hiding a scandalous past. The budding romance is rudely interrupted when Natalia's long-estranged brother Eugène turns up, reawakening a tragic past shared by brother and sister. Eugène's reappearance and the siblings' apparently sordid background entraps them, provoking a profound effect on the small resort community. There are whispers of incest, and veins of passion and violence… Director and scriptwriter René Féret is immensely respected by his peers. His delicately balanced period pieces are highly nuanced and profound, with passionate attention to costuming, inspiring him to adapt Gladys Huntington's gem of a novel, the dreamlike Madame Solario. Féret's films are an intimate and family affair, the ultimate in 'film d'auteur' - no less than 5 of Féret's family members were involved in various aspects of the acting and production.

Lake Como, September 1906. Aristocrats enjoying a vacation beside the lake in a luxury hotel must welcome into their midst Madame Solario. Young and beautiful but also bankrupt and divorced, she will be surprised by the unplanned arrival of her brother, Eugène Ardent, whom she hasn't seen for years. Brother and sister soon become aware of the effect they have the wealthy people of the select little world they now inhabit. They hence try to seduce several of them so as to improve their own personal situations. But their dark past catches up with them and creates a scandal, obliging them to flee...
