Synopsis:

Actor David Hemmings made one of his periodic forays into directing with the lightning-paced Race For the Yankee Zephyr. The film pits deer hunters against a group of unscrupulous businessmen. Their mutual goal is a reserve of gold, hidden somewhere in the Australian wilds. Ken Wahl and Leslie Ann Warren are the Hollywood-bred 'box office insurance' in this Australian/New Zealand coproduction.

Gibbie Gibson (Donald Pleasence) has discovered a World War II-era plane wreck in the mountains of New Zealand. When his discovery gets around town, Gibson and his daughter Sally (Warren) and his lodger Barney Whitaker (Wahl) find trouble from a group of treasure hunters led by a Mister Theo Brown (Peppard) who are intent on finding the cache of money they believe to be on the wreck.

In a lake high in the mountains of New Zealand hunter Gibbie Gibson discovers a plane wreck from WWII. When he tells it around, a gang of crooks follows and threatens him and his daughter, because they know there are 50 million dollars in the wreck. Helicopter pilot Barney helps Gibbie against them, risking his life thereby.
