Synopsis:
HEINRICH PENTHESILEA VON KLEIST (1983)
Hans Neuenfels' adaptations of Heinrich von Kleist's "The feud of the Schroffensteins". Kleist and Penthesilea, author and figure, are the mysterious subjects the director in the film sets out to explore. Neuenfels portrays himself as searching for clues.

THE FAMILY OR SCHROFFENSTEIN (1984)
Hans Neuenfels' adaptations of Heinrich von Kleist's "Penthesilea". And so "The feud of the Schroffensteins" remained in the shadow of the thematically related Romeo and Juliet. Until director Hans Neuenfels appeared on the scene.

THE LAST SEDUCTION OF EUROPE (1988)
Hans Neuenfels' adaptations of Heinrich von Kleist's "On the Theater of Marionettes".

The Family or Schroffenstein (1984)
The two noble families, Rossitz and Warwand, are related, and since the succession of both lines has been settled by a decree stating that if one family dies out the combined property shall go to the surviving family, they keep close, suspicious and resentful watch upon each other. The two families are obsessed by suspicion and a deep desire for revenge. Ottokar and Agnes are children, but from different families, and they are in love. They manage to exchange costumes and each is killed by his own father in mistake of the other. When they are lying bathed in their own blood the elders finally comprehend the insanity of the delusions.

Heinrich Penthesilea von Kleist (1983)
Writer and director Hans Neuenfels created this movie by filming his stage production of Penthesilea, interspersing cinematic touches throughout his story of an Amazonian Queen fighting Achilles and the Greeks. Interestingly enough, his theater performance was enhanced by the use of film clips, and like this film, has set ancient characters into the modern world, mixing Amazonian loin cloths with Berlin city-scapes.

The Last Seduction of Europe (1988)
After the essay "On the Marionette Theater" by Heinrich von Kleist. Spectacular images which constantly oscillate between nightmarish horror and empathy and, above all, reflect the fundamental concerns of the original text: beauty and grace.
