Synopsis:
Suffering from economic hardships that slowly rip apart their once harmonious relationship, a married couple (Judit Pogany and Robert Koltai) struggle to keep everything together - yet the husband becomes increasingly passive and the wife increasingly strident as time goes by. Their difficulties are created and portrayed by the spontaneous reactions of the actors themselves, following outlines of the story rather than the memorized lines of a scripted scenario. With minimal editing and direct sound that includes the noise of the camera, the black-and-white realism is rather bleak, reflecting the current state of their once caring relationship.

Tarr's portrait of a young, working-class married couple brings us close to the raw emotions brought forth as the mysteries of love unravel. The chronicle of their love's rise and fall is told in moving flashback, working back from the day that bearish Férj (Róbert Koltai) packs up and leaves his fed-up wife Feleség (Judit Pogány). Set in the 'prefab' apartment blocks of government housing, Tarr's story is at once a clear-eyed look at a relationship and a no-nonsense sketch of a place and time.

The last and often referred to as the best of the early films by the great Béla Tarr, this is a poignant tale of a young couple struggling to hold together a failing marriage in the face of poverty.
