Synopsis:
Film can be an incredibly powerful and intense experience. A good movie grabs your bite and make you laugh, cry, shudder with intense sympathy for the main characters. Sometimes a film seems more real than life. We believe in the story told, while at the same time we know that everything we see is invented or retold. It's All Film offers nine Dutch historical films from 1945 to the present. Vivid memories are interspersed with special clips. Including: Willeke van Ammelrooy, Jan de Bont, Kees Brusse, Paul Driessen, Michael Dudok de Wit, Louis van Gasteren, Heddy Honigmann, Carice van Houten, Pieter Kuijpers, Nanouk Leopold, Dick Maas, Dana Nechushtan, Mimoun Oaïssa, Pim de la Parra, Fons Rademakers, Renee Soutendijk, Huub Stapel, Jos Stelling, Eddy Terstall, Monique van de Ven, Pieter Verhoeff, Paul Verhoeven, Yorick van Wageningen, Alex van Warmerdam and Frans Weisz. List of Films: The Magic of the Silver Screen, A Wave of Innovation, The Golden Years, Change the World, Between Art and Box Office, The American Dream, Renowned in a Small World, Looking for Reality & Better Times.

The Magic of the Silver Screen
Sitting breathless on the edge of your seat, overwhelmed by emotions that move you to tears, that make you shiver or laugh out loud. Everyone knows the enthralling effect of film. Why is film able to revoke such grand emotions and how is this magic achieved?
A Wave of Innovation
The first generation of professionally trained film makers to graduate in the early 1960s had grand aspirations. Inspired by French, Italian and American films, these young and ambitious film makers wanted to show that things could be different. About what drove innovation in feature films.
The Golden Years
In the 1970s, Dutch film became professional. Producers thought up inventive strategies, the first real film stars were born. The nudity and explicit sex scenes that characterised Dutch film for some time seemed to be part of the intended success story. They certainly fuelled several of the greatest hits in Dutch film history.
Change the World
The political activism of the 1970s slowly penetrated the world of film. After the mass audience films of the early 1970s, often regarded as unfriendly to women, young film makers no longer want to make 'cheap' films but became more critical and committed to a changing society. What happened when film makers did go their own way?
Between Art and Box Office
Reaching the largest possible audience or telling one's own story without making consessions: that is the dilemma of the film maker. In the 1980s, there were both commercial box-office successes such as Little Darlings, Flodder and Amsterdamned and also small-scale individualistic jewels such as Abel, A Question of Silence and Charlotte. An apparent contradiction, but is it possible to make such a rigorous distinction between art film and box-office success?
The American Dream
Hollywood. The Mecca for many film makers. In the 1980s, Dutch film makers crossed the ocean to meet the American Dream. Some were successful. At the same time, films were made in Holland to the American recipe. A huge studio was built to try and copy the Hollywood approach and generate box-office successes.
Renowned in a Small World
Animation is the cradle of film. By turning magic-lantern slides, one could create the illusion of movement. Everyone knows cartoons, but animation is a lot more than that. Dutch animation film is not very well-known to a large audience. Yet The Netherlands has a rich tradition in this discipline of film with many international awards to prove it. What has made Dutch animation so special? And what is the influence of animation on live-action films, now and in the future?
Looking for Reality
The Dutch documentary tradition is famous far and wide. The Netherlands has produced many important documentary makers. However much they may differ, all these documentary makers wrestled with the same question: how do I portray reality and how real is that reality? The documentary maker occasionally intervened to make an argument more powerful. Then the question arises: when does one cross the boundary between truth and fiction?
Better Times
The relationship between film makers and their audience has its ups and downs. In the 1990s, Dutch film received a lot of competition from television that screened plenty of features and drama series. Even established fiml stars were no longer able to attract audiences to cinemas. Soaps became influential and new, cheaper film techniques appeared on the scene. Film makers have to exploit this trend. Will they succeed in enthralling audiences with the magic of their films?
