Synopsis:
Enter a nightmarish world of political cover-ups of international consequence in the last decade of the Cold War in this six-part BBC drama. When an ordinary British fishing vessel and its 36-man crew mysteriously disappears off the coast of Norway, journalist Martin Taylor (Tom Wilkinson) is determined to find out why. His father was on board, and is now missing. His investigations soon lead him to run up against the twin barriers of Royal Navy stonewalling and an impenetrable Soviet Politburo. The notorious finale shocked audiences when it was first aired in 1983. Spyship is based on the fictional novel by Brian Haynes and Tom Keene, former reporters who researched the real life sinking of the FV Gaul in 1974 which was shrouded in mystery.

While doing conventional research at the BBC in the late 1970s, the writing team of Tom Keene and Brian Haynes uncovered evidence of an incredible contemporary espionage incident. Their findings formed the basis of the team's fictional book Spyship, published in 1980. When an ordinary British fishing vessel turned up missing somewhere in the North Atlantic, gonzo journalist Martin Taylor was determined to find out the reason -- only to run up against the twin barriers of Royal Navy stonewalling and Soviet Politburo obfuscation. An Anglo-Australian co-production, the BBC miniseries version of Spyship was filmed on location in England and Norway. The series' six 55-minute episodes were originally telecast in 1983.

Six-part 1980s BBC drama, based on the novel by Brian Haynes and Tom Keene, in which a Cold War chill threatens an investigation into the sinking of a fishing vessel. When a British ship and the 36 crewmembers aboard are lost in the seas near the coast of Norway, journalist Martin Taylor (Tom Wilkinson), whose father was one of the men on the vessel, sets out to discover what happened. When he finds both the Royal Navy and Soviet contacts erecting barriers against him, his suspicions are aroused and he determines to get to the bottom of the matter. Peter Eyre, Lesley Nightingale and Jimmy Nail also appear in the series.
