Synopsis:

Shot in bright, saturated color and set in a landscape of tall grass and wide-open space, "Tideland" unfolds on the borderline between fantasy and reality, which is familiar territory for its director, Terry Gilliam. In movies like "The Fisher King," "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" and "The Brothers Grimm" he has set out for that frontier, but this time he has stumbled into a different no-man's land, the one between the merely bad and the completely indefensible. To make a long movie short: Jeliza-Rose (Jodelle Ferland) is the young child of two heroin addicts. Mom checks out early, and Dad (Jeff Bridges) does not stay around much longer ? though his rotting (and later embalmed) body lingers. Jeliza-Rose takes refuge in make-believe from the tawdriness of her existence. The worst that can be said of the first two-thirds of "Tideland" is that it is tiresome. Toward the end it becomes creepy, and not in a good way

Welcome to the world of Jeliza-Rose. What has brought Jeliza-Rose from Los Angeles to a rural Texan farmhouse? And why is her former rockabilly guitarist father not talking to her anymore? And who is making all that noise in the attic? Jeliza-Rose drifts from the harsh reality of her childhood and escapes into the fantasies of her own active imagination. This is a fantasy world to rival all others; here fireflies have names, bog-men awaken at dusk, monster sharks swim down railroad tracks, and disembodied Barbie heads share her adventures.

Pre-teen Jeliza-Rose's parents are hopeless drug addicts. When pa, rocker Noah, finds ma OD's, he fears to be charged of homicide and takes her along to his ma's place, in a desolate country region. With Noah passed out, the girl mentally transfers to a fantasy worlds she and her doll heads enter magically. In its adventures she also stars the crazy locals, notably Dell, her domineering hag ma and adult, but retarded brother Dickens.
