The Fifteen Streets (1989)
Catherine Cookson's powerful drama is set against the harsh, turbulent background of poverty, bigotry and the class division of Northern England at the turn of the century. It tells the moving story of the romance between a rugged Tyneside labourer and the daughter of a wealthy local shipbuilder. Their love throws both their worlds into turmoil as they struggle to overcome the class divide that is "The Fifteen Streets".
The Man Who Cried (1993)
Set against the background of the Depression in the 1930s and the Second World War, the story centres around Abel Mason and his desperate search for love and happiness in relationships with four women. After an affair ends in tragedy, he leaves his vicious wife Lena and travels North with his ten year old son Dick. To secure a home for the boy and employment for himself, he makes an illegal marriage with the widow of a wealthy garage owner.
The Gambling Man (1995)
Rory Connor knows what he wants out of life and he knows he won't get it working as a rent collector. He believes his way up in the world is through his disapproved of passion for gambling. Rory uses his talents as a launch to a better life - he becomes the proud owner of a boatyard and marries his childhood sweetheart. However, beneath his success is a tangled web of lies and deceit.
Colour Blind (1998)
Bridget Paterson seriously offends her Geordie family's Irish Catholic sensibilities by marrying an African sailor, whom she is also pregnant by. After being accused of murder, her husband is eventually forced to leave town with half of Newcastle out to get him. As their daughter grows up, she must learn to cope with the racism which surrounds her. Starring Niamh Cusack (Heartbeat), Tony Armatrading (Supply and Demand) and Art Malik (Holby City).
The Girl (1996)
In mid-19th century Yorkshire, Hannah Boyle is left with the family of Matthew Thornton, the man her dying mother claims fathered her. Ill-treated by Thornton's bitter and vindictive wife Anne, who views Hannah only as evidence of her husband's infidelity, she is married off to the village butcher, whose waspish mother torments her further. But through her patience, intelligence and strength, she wins her freedom and the man she loves.
Rag Nymph (1997)
Seperated from her prostitute mother as the woman flees on foot down the filthy mid-19th century streets of Newcastle from the police, ten year old Millie is taken under the wing of rag lady Aggie Winkovski and her crippled helper, Ben. Young Millie is a very well-brought up little girl, which Aggie questions and finds out that her mother had been a ladies maid before being forced into prostitution. Aggie ends up becoming Millie's guardian, protecting her from the local pimp, Boswell, who wants to have pretty Millie as part of his business, and we see Millie grow up to a happy, well educated young woman on Aggie's sparse finances; but is she still safe from the hands of Boswell and his customers?
The Moth (1997)
Set in 1913 Northumbria, England, the story is about Robert Bradley, a strong-willed young worker at a Jarrow shipyard, who arrives home one day to find that his father has died. At the funeral he meets his father's estranged brother, his uncle John Bradley, and his wife Alice who offer Robert a new home and a place in his uncle's carpentry workshop. Robert accepts and after a few weeks at his new home, he is out walking late one night on the grounds of a rundown estate when he meets an ethereal young girl, Millie Thorman, whom the locals call the Moth, and befriends her. All seems to be going well for Robert until his cousin, Carrie, is revealed to be pregnant. Robert is immediately the suspected father, which he adamantly denies, but no one believes him. Even worse Carrie will not say who the real father is because she has always had a crush on Robert, and would rather marry him. Robert refuses to take the responsibility, shocking the townspeople, and leaves his relative's house, finding a place to work on the estate of Millie Thorman's once wealthy, now debt-ridden family. It is there that a mutual attraction develops between Robert and Sarah Thorman, Millie's older sister, but their social differences and Robert's reputation stand in their way.
The Round Tower (1998)
Set in mid-1950's England, this story tells of the wealthy, socially upwardly-progressive Ratcliffe family. Their youngest daughter, seventeen year old Vanessa, feels alienated from her selfish parents, who are more interested in their eldest daughter's upcoming marriage into one of their town's old families. An old friend of the family, who is himself trapped in a loveless marriage, makes love to Vanessa one night, and she becomes pregnant, but won't reveal who the father is. Her parents are sure it is an employee of the Ratcliffe's, Angus Cotton, who hotly denies this and quits his job to go and start his own business. Vanessa ends up leaving home, and when Angus hears of the poor conditions she's living in in a Newcastle skid-row neighbourhood, he offers to marry her and she accepts.
