Synopsis:
As the Allied forces race to liberate Paris from the German army, various factions of the French resistance take to the streets to help free the city from the long occupation. Resistance fighters Yvon Morandat (Jean-Paul Belmondo), Docteur Monod (Charles Boyer) and Françoise Labé (Leslie Caron) organize operations in order to welcome the armies of General George S. Patton (Kirk Douglas), while Wehrmacht General Dietrich von Choltitz (Gert Fröbe) must wrestle his conscience with his orders from Hitler to destroy the city.

In this sprawling, star-laden film, we see the struggles of various French resistance factions to regain control of Paris near the end of World War II. The Nazi general in charge of Paris, Dietrich von Cholitz (Fröbe), is under orders from Hitler himself to burn the city if he cannot control it or if the Allies get too close. Much of the drama centers around the moral deliberations of the general, the Swedish ambassador (Welles), and the eager but desperate leaders of the resistance.

In August 1944, Adolf Hitler assigns General Dietrich von Choltitz to be in the military governor of Paris and to burn the city in case of the Allied forces arrival. Meanwhile, the French resistance has internal fights of the different factions and leaderships. One French major convinces the Allied forces to liberate Paris from the Germans. General von Choltitz disobeys Hitler's orders and spares Paris from destruction.
