Lars Ole, 5c / Lars Ole Fifth Grade (1973)
In Lars-Ole 5C, we meet 12-year-old Lars-Ole (Søren Rasmussen), an average 5th grader who is in love, likely for the first time, in fourth grader Inger. Inger is, however, in love, and 'going steady', with Hanse, a friend of Lars-Ole's. Distraught from jealousy Lars-Ole tells on Hanse who gets blamed and physically punished for a mischief, and Inger dismisses Lars-Ole as 'mean'. At a school dance the still smitten Lars-Ole steals a dance from Inger during the rheinländer polka. That is really all there is to the story, but Nils Malmros tells it with a painstaking earnestness and an attention to detail that bears witness of an almost photographic memory when it comes to this tumultuous time of a person's life, so that it is impossible not to get sucked into the story, remembering one's own adolescent, and seeing the depiction of this particular adolescent as a monument over human sorrow and frustration.
Boys (1977)
The boys are actually one and the same, Ole, as seen through three ages and episodes: as a small boy having a boy cousin as his house guest; as a high-school boy in abject love; and as a young stud trying to bed down a nurse. Everything is observed with sadness, wry humor and a sharp ear for colloquial youthful dialogue by director Nils Malmros in this third revisiting of his childhood city of Århus.
Tree of Knowledge (1981)
The story takes place at the end of the 50s in Aarhus, Denmark and follows a group of children from the 7th to the 9th grade. What they experience are not the grand dramas of life, but the events they do experience affect them more powerfully than at any other time in their lives. The film centres around Elin, the prettiest and most mature girl in the class. She plays on these advantages more or less unconsciously. It makes the girls jealous and the boys unsure. Therefore she becomes the scapegoat for their unresolved sexual awareness. For Elin, this being frozen out of the once happy circle becomes a tragedy, also on account of being totally misunderstood by her old-fashioned parents. The other main character is Niels-Ole, the leading boy in the class, who arouses indignation by rejecting girls in his own class in favour of the younger and prettier girl, Majbritt. At the same time, this film is a light-hearted yet serious account of the beautiful difficult years between childhood and youth, based on the director Nils Malmros' own experiences as a schoolboy in Aarhus in the late 1950s.
The Beauty & The Beast (1983)
When Mette and her father are left alone over the Christmas holidays to paint the new nursery the father ends up alone most of the time. The 16-year-old Mette is always off with her friends at the disco or skating, and the father does not mind until he discovers that young Jønne has taken some semi-nude photos of Mette and clearly is intending to go further in their relationship. Suddenly the father starts hanging out with Mette and her friends as they practice winter sports together - and there is hardly anything stranger, or more embarrassing, as far as Mette is concerned. It is clear that father and daughter are heading toward a change in their relationship as both have to adjust to her "growing up."
Århus by Night (1989)
A film about filmmaking, and a portrait of Malmros's centre of the world: Århus. Also a trenchant look at 1970s Denmark - surface permissiveness offset by deeply-seated suspicion against any real kind of political liberty. A comedy, a melodrama and a realist exposé all rolled into one.
Pain of Love (1992)
Kirsten is a young woman still in school. She falls in love with her teacher Søren. When she fails to pass her exams, Søren helps her prepare for new exams, but she is disappointed when Søren moves in with his colleague Inge-Lise. Kirsten sleeps with an older man she meets in a bar, and when she becomes pregnant she chooses to have the baby. But she is hit by depression and is only barely saved when she tries to kill herself and her unborn child. Although Søren and Kirsten move in together after she has her baby, their life together is marked by distance and sadness because of Kirsten's mood swings and paranoia, and it comes to a dramatic ending.
Barbara (1997)
Young vicar Mr. Paul arrives at the Faroe Islands to take up a benefice, and meets the young Barbara, twice married to vicars, and with both husbands laid cold in the grave. Despite the warnings of the surrounding community and his own religious scruples, he falls victim to Barbara's at once innocent and sinful charm. The appearance of the charming and gallant Andreas Heide in Thorshavn puts their love to the severest of tests.
Facing the Truth (2002)
Facing the Truth (Danish: At kende sandheden) is a 2002 Danish drama written and directed by Nils Malmros. Shot in black-and-white documentary style, and based on the real life of Malmros' father, the film relates the hardships of a young neurosurgeon struggling through a medical lawsuit.
Aching Hearts (2009)
A bunch of 15-year-olds in Viborg make their first experiences with love, kissing and sexuality, coming together and drifting apart. The film follows the adolescents over a three-year-period, focusing on the relationship between Jonas and Agnete, which is made difficult by misconceptions, Agnete's interest for philosophy and Jonas's friend Toke, her father's mental illness and Jonas's own indecision regarding his feelings for her. The story ends when the protagonists finish school.
Sorrow and Joy (2013)
In SORROW AND JOY filmmaker Johannes and his wife, schoolteacher Signe, experience the biggest sorrow and misfortune one can ever imagine. Nevertheless, in all the hopelessness they must try to reach for mutual and mature love in order to continue life after death. Director Nils Malmros is one of Danish films most significant personalities and during the last forty years his characters have always had a strong autobiographical element. Being his most personal film to date, SORROW AND JOY is no exception.

Lars Ole, 5c / Lars Ole Fifth Grade (1973)
Scenes from the schoolyard. Lars Ole is in love with Inger, who's going steady with his friend Hanse. When the latter does something stupid, Lars Ole does something mean. Both pay, but in very different ways. Malmros's international breakthrough: his first vision of the world in a drop of water.
Boys (1977)
A film in three movements about boys growing (but not necessarily maturing) into men. From getting a basic notion of it, through first personal experiences to finally finding a certain sense of sexual freedom - with all the responsibilities and pain this brings.
Tree of Knowledge (1981)
As a group of Danish children pass into adolescence, gradually the most popular girl becomes an outcast, for trivial reasons that she never understands.
The Beauty & The Beast (1983)
Mette is sixteen and driving her dad mad - partly with jealousy. A head-first dive into the twisted realms of hebephilia as a study of intertwined confusions - of a daughter discovering her sexuality, and of a father having to deal with the feeling of being at once too old, yet not old at all.
Århus by Night (1989)
A personal tale of the director's experiences on his first film, combined with memories of his childhood.
Pain of Love (1992)
A young woman who falls in love with her teacher is hit by heartache and challenges she is not prepared for and struggles to escape her dark frame of mind.
Barbara (1997)
A love story about a priest and his fatal encounter with the seductive widow, Barbara. Only 28, she is already the widow of two priests. Although he is warned, Mr Paul follows his heart?
Facing the Truth (2002)
80-year-old neurosurgeon, Richard Malmros, is confronted by a series of deaths caused by Thorostrast, a medium he used for x-ray exaations towards the end of World War II.
Aching Hearts (2009)
Jonas and Agnete commit to one another while still at school. As others shyly experiment with first love and desire and make tacit attempts at more serious forms of togetherness, they actually try to make their relationship work, hard as it is.
Sorrow and Joy (2013)
When filmmaker Johannes returns from a lecture one evening, he finds the house in mourning and terror: his wife has killed their baby. A meditation on the limits of human law and the infinite possibilities of kindness and understanding, and a Protestant melodrama on the subject of grace.
